Against the Future

Rollers/Sparkers don't believe in the future. That's why you're hearing about this in advance...

You can catch R/S live at Whelan's in Dublin this coming Saturday, June 7th, playing support to UK band Guapo. Also appearing will be Scientific Bong. Doors will open at 8pm. Admission is €12.50.

But back to the main item: the future. The future is a lie, a sham. The future is merely the present dressed up as an astronaut. It runs around the sitting room making "shhhzhhh" noises and performing experiments with unusual gases. And which of us is taken in by this charade? Nobody but the present itself.

The future is, to quote more than one primary-school teacher, only fooling itself.

Why does time find itself in this disconcerting quandary? Simple. Every detail of the Rollers/Sparkers show this coming Saturday night has been worked out in advance. So much so, in fact, that the precise duration of every track, every apparently accidental fluffed note, every soul-snag of the drummer's fear-yelps have already been determined. Thus, it is fair to say that while the events themselves have not yet taken place, there is nothing about them that can vary from the plan as it exists right now, as you read this. Thus, one can say that there is no real difference between the present and the so-called future. The future is merely an extension of the present. What is to come is merely a part of what already is. Even the voice you are "hearing" in this very bulletin is a voice recorded, as it were, in writing...

DISCLAIMER: Rollers/Sparkers would like to point out that although the details of Saturday's show are the subject of a highly detailed plan, the plan itself has not yet been made available to the band. In the unlikely event that this situation changes, an update will be issued.
