Patrick and Barbara Conroy O'Donnell left Ireland, I believe, in 1850 and sailed to Melbourne, Australia. My great grandfather, Joseph O'Donnell was born in Melbourn in 1854. I know Patrick and Barbara returned to Ireland because later children were born in Galway. My great grandfather Joseph O'Donnell arrived in Oakland, California in 1870 at the age of 16. Three brother and a sister arrived in the San Francisco Bay Area at different times in the late 1800s. Barbara shows up (minus Patrick)in San Francisco in 1884. I'm fairly certain they came from Galway, but have not been able to learn anything more about my Irish connection. Any suggestions?

I want to share what I have found thus far Michael and Mary Dineen O'Donnell from Inishkeel Parish, County Donegal. Arrived in US on Bridgewater April 1863 though Castle Garden. They had seven children with two living to adult hood, Alice who married Eli Killan/Killem/Kellem and James Joseph who married first Mary Harrigan my great grandmother and second Charlotte Kerner. Joseph and Mary are the parents of my grandfather Lester Aloyisius (named after a Harrigan uncle). Lester married Isabell M. Creen. Lester and Isabell had 6 children, one being my father Edwin Allen O'Donnell. All lived in Brooklyn, NY and many of my relatives live in NY to this day although most have left Brooklyn. My father joined the Air Force and left NY very young. He resides in Nebraska. I would love to learn more about my family, the O'Donnell, Harrigans and Creens. Thanks for all you do! Kathleen

I couldn't make it to the reunion this year, but am hoping to be able to come along for the excursion in 2007 [or 2008 if it doesn't happen until then!]. I included a link to the Clan site from Red Hugh's page in my Irish site [see http://www/naylor.com.au/irish ] and would be delighted if you wanted to link back to me. Vincent and others: A great Clan meeting you put together. Thank you and everyone involved for everything. And to other O'Donnells out there, try to make it to the next one! It was something you'll never forget for the rest of your life! I met some O'Donnell relations that I never knew about from the Larkfield line that were sitting in front of me on the bus and there were 170 people there (woah!). It was an awesome event even if we rocked the town of Donegal down to the core of O'Donnell castle - don't miss the next one! Cheers!

Who was Leopoldo O'Donnell? Leopoldo O'Donnell (1809–67), Spanish general and statesman, member of a branch of the O'Donnells of Tir Chonaill. He fought successfully for the infant Isabella II’s claim to the throne, against the claim of her uncle, Don Carlos. When General Espartero seized power in Spain (1840), O'Donnell went into exile. He failed in a later attempted coup against Espartero in 1841, but after Espartero's fall, O'Donnell became governor of Cuba (1844–48). In 1854 he led a military revolt and, assisted by a popular uprising in Madrid, overthrew the government of Maria Christina, Isabella’s regent mother. He then served as war minister under Espartero, when the latter returned to power. He ousted Espartero in 1856, and was several times premier (1856, 1858–63, 1865–66) under Isabella II. As the leader of the Liberal Union party, which he had founded, O'Donnell followed a more or less moderate policy. He took command in the successful Spanish campaign (1859–60) in Morocco and after the capture of Tetuan was given the title Duque de Tetuan. He was one of the leading figures in C19th Spain and a hero in memory. If you are ever in Madrid take a walk along Calle O’Donnell, one of the major avenues in the city.

i never enquired much more than a simple question of my grandfather's career, in my life. As it is my mother who is the O'Donnell, daughter of Alan. i always just considered myself a Keane, taking after my father in most ways. I was told only recently of my important lineage, and i hope to enquire further.

With all the Australian interest maybe I'll get a response. My mggm left Donegal for the USA about 1872. She married a Andrew McGinley and settled in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. I remember one of my aunts saying that when she was little she recalled Bridget showing a letter from her twin sister (name cannot be recalled) who emigrated to Australia about the same time. Bridget had 10 sons and her twin 10 daughters. Would be very interested in any connections.

The O'Donnell's reply to O'Neill's first demand for homage and tribute: "No hawk, no hound, no steed nor steer, O'Neill gets from me, No tribute send, no homage yield, No vassel clan are we, You may be Chief of Clandeboy, And Lord of all Tir Eoghan, But I am Prince in Donegal, Let each man hold his own". Sean O Faoilean is right when he says that it was news of the death of Red Hugh that broke O'Neill.

Hello to all my O'Donnell clan and "LANG MAY YOUR LUM WREEK" My mother was born in Portaferry in Northern Ireland her and my father in Greenock on the west coast of Scotland only a stones throw from Ireland really. So I consider myself to be fortunate to have both Irish and Scotish blood running through my veins. I am thrilled to find this site as it has given me a sense of belonging. I was christened John after my father but my mother would have no other but Sean and it causes no end of grief with officialdom but it is a mantle that I wear with pride. By now the latest reunion will over and I hope every one enjoyed. ouru from Aus.

Hello to all of the O'Donnells wherever you may be! I am located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, and am descended from the O'Donnells of Innisail. My great grandfather, John Cornelius O'Donnell, came to the USA in 1855 on the ship Emily Peel. He settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and fathered 23 children - including my grandfater and all of my great uncles and aunts, all of whom are long gone at this point. I do have some cousins around here from the same lineage. Would be happy to hear from anyone who might be related (I know. We all are!). Best to all. John M. O'Donnell

Vince Thanks for the tip to contact Hotel Central. They said they have rooms for July 1-5 but did not confirm my request for a room those nights. I assume they got my request. You have a great website. I will stop June 28-30 at GRO Dublin to do search on my ancestors from Currane Co Mayo before coming to Clan Gathering. I look forward to the Clan gathering and will participate in all events July 2-5. regards Hugh O'Donnell

Does anyone have a Patrick O'Donnell and his wife Rose, both b abt 1821 in Ireland (no details yet hence this message), in there family tree? Patrick and Roses' known children Bridget b abt 1853, Anthony b abt 1858, Constantine b abt 1859 and Jane b abt 1861. Bridget was born in Liverpool, Anthony, Constantine and Jane were born in Dalton-in-Wigan Lancashire. The family lived in Crow Lane Dalton up to about 1885 I think. I cannot trace Patrick or Roses' deaths, so it may be that they returned to Ireland although Rose is listed as living with son Anthony's family in Pemberton in 1901, but Patrick is not. I'm rather stuck at this point but hoping a cousin somewhere will be able to help. Best wishes to all O'Donnells wherever they are.

Unfortunately I didn't know there was to be a clan gathering in July otherwise.. I would have been there with my twin daughters. My father was born in Burtonport Co Donegal in 1902-died 1985.. I believe the family came from one of the islands "Eiter". There were five brothers (John, Dominic, Pat James, Danny and my dad Charles) and four sisters. They were scattered to the four corners of the world so didn't really know them. If there is anybody out there who is related I would like to hear from you.

Thank-you Tom for the invitation to what I'm sure will be a great gathering - unfortunately a visit to the old country takes more than a couple of days planning but will be there in spirit! I am the daughter of Trevor O'Donnell, grandaughter of Joseph O'Donnell and first cousin of Malachy O'Donnell of Perth,Australia (see email 14/6/05). I have been married to a Hogan for 12 years and am the mother of 4 little Hogans but still can't give up my name - like one of the other O'Donnell's said "there is just something about being an O'Donnell" and it's just great to know there are a fair few of us out there.

Growing up in country Australia were it is hot and dry would be far removed from the rolling green (mud) of Ireland. Thanks to Frank McCourt for teaching the world how to at least recognise my name, the pron still is being worked at..I got the invitation last night as was way impressed as was my mum (she got one to) but Charles O'D (dad) missed out...not happy and want's to quit (what I'm not sure). My grandad was Joseph Malachy and his brother Malachy Joseph played footy in Ballarat around 1905-1915 and Joe had four sons, Ian,Ross,Trevor and Charles who all grew up in the malee scrub, went to St Pats in Ballarat in the 40's. Anyway thanks for the invite to the clan gathering but a bit more notice would have helped..3 weeks? God are all O'Ds last minute dashers (like me?) or did any of you finally work out how to be organised? p.s I bet at gatherings you all talk at the same time..hehe.

Patrick was then adopted by a Roman Catholic Family from Salisbury Sth Australia (as this was her request Catholic Life). In 1997 he received some details but still doesn't know his O'Donnell Clan. He was so proud of the name that he changed his name back to his birth name and is still seeking his family details as he would like to meet them and close his quest of his Identity. Hi, Thanks Tom for sending an Invitation to my father Cedric O'Donnell (76 years old), who was the son of William O'Donnell, who was the brother of Mark O'Donnell, who named one of his son's Tom, after their brother Tom. My grandfather William arrived by Ship with his father William, from Europe, he had 17 siblings. Dad (Cedric) thinks there were 6 siblings that arrived with their father William (Great Grandfather), Warrnambool, Victoria. Aunty Annie, May and Ann were O'Donnells, only Aunty Annie married and had 4 children (married name Sullivan), whilst the sisters lived with them (Ballarat). Aunty Annie's only son Kevin had 7 boys Approx. My Grandfather William, left Ballarat Victoria, as felt hurt that one of his brothers got into the war and he could not; as was underage. He journeyed looking for work and liked the wheather in Queensland (Warm & Sunny) and became a Cane Farmer in N.E. Queensland. In my immediate family I have 3 sisters, one brother and 8 nephews and 3 nieces. I have not married yet. Well what can I say, we were thrilled to read your quality invitation and when I have time, would like to get an email address from you for mum and dad. I may get one for myself? Thanks again, Kindest Regards, Jenny.

I'm just back from a two week holiday in Ireland - very cold, at least in Donegal where I visited the castle, excellent. It was my first time north of the town of Donegal. The road by Mt Errigal and the scenary is magnificent. Went to the Rock of Doon and to Rathmullan. I will plan a longer stay next time. Anyway a cousin of mine from Wicklow (also an O'Donnell) brought me to the grave of Art O'Neill in the Wicklow Mountains. I hadn't known about it. In Eason's I bought Sean O Faolain's 'The Great O'Neill'. I am still reading it but one snippet of information from it is that Red Hugh and the O'Donnells were with the O'Neills at the Battle of the Yellow Ford. I wasn't aware of this. The O'Neills took on the Vanguard (of Bagnal) and the O'Donnells hit the Rearguard. They both closed on the Mainbody. The English casualties were three quarters of their total force. O Domhnaill Abu!

Aodh Ruadh Ó Domhnaill by Thomas MacGreevy "But he never said And it seemed odd he Never had heard The aspirated name Of the centuries-dead Bright-haired young man Whose grave I sought. All day I passed In greatly built gloom From dusty gilt tomb Marvellously wrought To tomb Rubbing At mouldy inscriptions With fingers wetted with spit And asking Where I might find it And failing. Yet when Unhurried Not as at home Where heroes, hanged, are buried With non-commissioned officers' bored maledictions Quickly in the gaol yard They brought His blackening body Here To rest Princes came Walking Behind it And all Valladolid knew And out to Simancas all knew Where they buried Red Hugh" (MacGreevy felt the following note integral to the understanding of the poem and insisted that it be printed as an addendum: Aodh Ruadh Ó Domhnaill, "Red" Hugh O'Donnell, Prince of Tirconaill, went to Spain to consult with King Philip III after the defeat of the Irish and Spanish at Kinsale in 1601. He was lodged in the castle of Simancas during the negotiations but, poisoned by a certain James Blake, a Norman-Irish creature of the Queen of England (Elizabeth Tudor), he died there. As a member of the Third Order of Saint Francis, he was buried in the church of San Francisco at Valladolid. This church was destroyed during the nineteenth century and none of the tombs that were in it seems to have been preserved).

Does one have to be an 'O'Donnell' or will an affiliation through ancestry suffice, to gain entry to the Clan gathering. Or is it open to all?

I am researching the following family members and would love to hear from someone in Letterkenny that may recognize the names or perhaps researching or know of the family as well: Ann Jane O'Donnell is my 2nd great grandmother who married John McClay and lived in Letterkenny. They had a daughter, Elizabeth, born about 1860, who married James McDade (his parents Hugh and Winifred Mary Sweeney McDade - they lived in Glasgow) on 15 July 1883 at St Eunan's in Letterkenny. The witnesses were: Manus O'Donnell of Old Town and Catherine Boyce of Calhame. Elizabeth and James McDade had the following children: Born in Letterkenney: Hugh McDade (my grandfather) born 2 Aug 1884 Ann Jane McDade born 18 Apr 1886 The family then went to Glasgow Scotland and the following children were born there: Winifred born 13 May 1891 married Ed Sharkey on Feb 26 1918 in Glasgow and had four children: William(twin), James(twin), and Winifred (Una). She died 3 Mar 1962 in Glasgow. Joseph born 1897 and died in France during WWI on 9 April 1917 Francis born 1901 married Anne Carrick 28 Mar 1921 in Glasgow and had three children: James, Margaret and Hugh. He died 20 Sept 1965 in Glasgow.

I am a descendant of Martin O'Donnell who left the village of Cooraclare in West Clare about 1840 for Australia. This makes me one of the southern branch of the O'Donnells so perhaps I am not messaging the right site, however most clan O'Donnell websites do at least tolerate those who may be descendants of slightly less fearsome Gaelic heros. I would like to receive messages from anybody from the above part of Ireland or anybody in the world who is likely to be of the southern branch of O'Donnells.

My grandpa was Joseph Edmund O'Donnell, b. Liepsic Ohio, 1908(?). Hi dad was Owen O'Donnell and I think he came from Cork, Ireland. No idea when or when he was born or anything else about him. He married Katherine Kihm, a German girl, and was a politician in Liepsic. Owen was elected to the Ohio Legislature, was a probate court judge (you didn't need to be a lawyer then, just get elected, and was appointed U.S. Postmaster. By trade he was a tailor. As far as I know I am the very last of our O'Donnell's. If anyone out there may have more info on us, please let me know.

Patrick was the son of a Thomas and Elisabeth O'Donnell. They resided in or around Killarney, County Kerry. He was labeled as a rogue and a thief by the British and used as forced labor on a British sailing ship. He jumped ship in Chatham, N.B. Canada and made his way up the Southwest Miramichi River to Carrolls Crossing. Please contact me if your ancestors have routs in this part of North America.

James d. 5 Dec 1915 and is buried at Williamsburg, Iowa Co., IA. I have no parents names, but he had an older brother, Anthony, b. 1840, m. Mary McGonagle. OK, I'm back again, one more messsage. While home on vacation I bought J McCavitt's 'Flight of the Earls'. I was interested to see on pp 160/161 the deportation of 6,000 irish men to Sweden after 1607 flight. So I opened up the Swedish telephone directory and stared to type in Ulster names. Guess what the country is full of us: O'Donnell - 23, O'Neill - 41, Maguire - 11, Sweeney - 11, Murphy - 105, Kelly - 126,O'Brien 60. Give it a try www.gulasidorna.se, next privatepersoner, Efternamn. can we make any contact with them, can anyone phone 2 or 3 of them and ask how far back they go? Let me know.

Greetings again from Kisangani D R Congo. I'm back after a few weeks vacation in Ireland during which I went to Spain and walked Calle O'Donnell. I’ve always been a staunch clansman, even though I didn’t know about the Clan Association. My father was at the 1954 gathering. I suppose working in out of the way places I was at a disadvantage as far as information of the association was concerned. After Madrid I traveled on to Vallodolid to find Semancas Castle. I spent a Sunday morning asking passers by at the city park and eventually found someone who knew of the castle and the clan’s visit in 2002. Talk about doing things the hard way. The castle entrance is heavily surrounded by building works and approach was not possible. Since returning I have been reading the website and will definitely join you in July ’05.

Kisangani on the Congo is my ‘home town’ – that’s life in the UN, “wherever I lay my head, that’s my home”. At 4,700 kilometers in length, it is the second largest river in Africa. The river here is 2 kms wide but at Mbandaka it is 14 kilometers wide, flows through six channels, averages 20 meters in depth and flows at 12 kms per hour. An indication of the strength of the river is that at the estuary the brown water marks the Atlantic for 40 kms out into the ocean. At the time of the Belgian colonization it was made famous for armchair travelers by Joseph Conrad’s novel “Heart of Darkness”, an account of an expedition upriver by a steamboat captain in search of Mr. Kurtz, one of King Leopold the Second’s trading station managers who had gone half mad and half native. It’s worth reading, along with the other essential accounts of the history of this region, “The Ghost of Leopold the Second”, “The King Incorporate” and “In the Footsteps of Mr Kurtz”, an account of Mobutu’s years in power. The concept of Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” formed the context of a well known Hollywood movie ‘Apocalypse Now’. The name given to the US Colonel who had gone fully mad and fully native was Col Kurtz (Marlin Brando). The similarity is also reflected by the fact that in an age of modern warfare the fate that befell the pilot of Col Kurtz’s rescue boat, (impaled by a spear thrown from the river bank), was also the fate of the pilot of the rescue boat of Leon Kurtz. So why is Kisangani at this particular point of the river? The answer is simply because this is the maximum point of continuous navigation of the River Congo upstream from Kinshasa. When the colonial settlement started to penetrate inland it came up against the obstacle of the cataracts at this point. The settlers were not surprised by the cataracts because they had been marked on the map for them by Stanley who passed this way a decade earlier crossing Africa from the east as he mapped out the river systems of Central Africa and the Rift Valley. Because the steam ships could go no further Kisangani emerged at this point as an important centre of trade, communication and administration. The colonists solved the navigation blockage with 120 kms of railway. Where the cataract obstacles ended, and also consequently the railway, the town of Ubundu emerged.

My interest in the O'Donnell Clan stems from the fact that my mother's earliest Donnell ancestor in America was Patrick Donnell, born in Donegal in 1749 and his wife, Margaret Peggy Brice, born in Donegal in 1760. They were married in Baltimore County, MD. on 9-23-1794. Two or 3 years ago I made e-mail inquiries to individuals in Donegal Co. Ireland hoping to learn the names of the parents and siblings of Patrick Donnel in Donegal. Patrick Donnell's family were lifelong Presbyterians in America and they were burried at the Presbyterian Church cemetary in Westmoreland Co. PA. My brother, now retired as Chief Auditor for Exxon, lived in London for 4 years and he began the Donnell genealogical search years ago. I am a retired US Administrative Law Judge and upon retirement I also attempted to learn more about my mother's Donnell family from Donegal. Hopefully I will be able to come to Donegal in July 2005 and meet you and O'Donnell Clan members. I remember my deceased grandfather Joseph Kennedy Donnell's strong loyalty to his Irish heritage. You indicate the difficulties involved in Donegal genealogical research. Thank you again for the extensive information sent to me by e-mail regarding the O'Donnell Clan. Best Regards, Robert L. Mills

My great-great grandmother, Eleanor O'Donnell (married to John McGinley) was from Donegal and immigrated to the western Pennsylvania region of the United States in 1800.
