On their eponymous debut album Garbage promised a lot more than they eventually delivered. There were a lot of good ideas, but not all of them making the transformation into the songs they warranted. With Version 2.0, Garbage have produced a much more complete and accomplished album. As expected from a band formed more with the studio than live audiences in mind, this album like its predecessor is a highly polished affair. With Shirley Manson singing up a storm, whether it's the sonic assault of I Think I'm Paranoid & When I Grow Up or the wistful Medication which showcases her singing talents beautifully. All this vamping it up on Shirley's part is complimented by beguiling tunes, which are ridiculously catchy. In particular When I Grow Up & Special will have you humming snatches of them for days. Garbage are one of those enigmatic bands who refuse to be pigeon-holed. They use all their undoubted studio trickery on Hammering In My Head. They show their affection for dance beats and breaks on Dumb , yet there are guitars aplenty on I Think I'm Paranoid. It's exactly this cornucopia of styles that piques the interest and will keep you coming back for more. Rating : 8 / 10 |
