Propellerheads - DECKSANDDRUMSANDROCKANDROLL

DECKSANDDRUMSANDROCKANDROLL
- Propellerheads

Hip Shakingly Hypnotic HyperVentilation Inducing Drums & Bass. If this album doesn't get you moving then rigor mortis should be setting in any minute now.

Propellerheads would seem to have found the hiding place for the most hypnotically danceable beats and rhythms imaginable, rounded them up and married them to some mesmerising tunes and sampled lyrics to create an album which would be done an injustice to label it as a dance album or a hip-hop album. This album has too many influences to be just dance or hip-hop or any other label you may care to taint it with.

While Velvet Pants has hip-hop undertones, with a definite De La Soul influence. Bang On! is guitars with a kicking drum and bass line. Propellerheads reworking of the old Bond theme On Her Majesty's Secret Service could almost make George Lazenby an acceptable 007 its that good. From the opening song Take California right through to the last track, Spybreaker this album is a Drum & Bass feast. A Number Of Microphones is the only weakness on the album, but its only 2 minutes long, so we won't hold that against them.

The Propellerheads however definitely have their finest moment when they team up with Shirley Bassey on History Repeating. This song has a beautifully understated backing, allowing Shirley Bassey's amazing voice freedom to belt out a superb performance, while still managing to keep it funky.

This is an album to be played at maximum volume, with the bass slammed as high as it can possibly go. A cornucopia of Beats & Rhythms and a must for every collection. DECKSANDDRUMSANDROCKANDROLL, indeed!!
