Report
This year saw Salthill back again in Adult
competition with the fielding of a Junior C team. Despite losing most of
their matches, the signs definitely look encouraging for the team, and
we all have high hopes for the team next year under the guidance of Eamon
O' Shea.
The minors had a good year, reaching the
semi-finals only to be defeated by a strong Annaghdown team, much like
the under-16's. They won all their group games but one, and proceeded to
the semi-finals against rivals An Spidéal, who pipped the Salthill
side by a single point. Nevertheless, this is a team that will go places
in the years to come.
The Under-15's went one better than their
Under-16 counterparts and brought home the gold in the City League, defeating
An Spidéal very easily. This win could not have been acheived were
it not for the hard work put in at training by the team, many of whom were
on the Under-16 squad, and the managers, Paul O'Gorman and Steven Connolly.
Hopefully they will acheive more success in the Under-16 Championship in
2002.
However, let us not forget the great success
of he Under-10's. Under the management of Ger Mulholland, Billy Hyland
and Eddie O' Donnell, this season they entered into a tournament run by
Na Piarsigh in Limerick for clubs from urban areas, and did very well.
They won all of their group matches in their section in the qualifying
stages, and were the top-ranking Galway team there. They then progressed
to the next stage, and came fourth overall against some of the top teams
from the country. On a more local scale, the Under-10's were also entered
into the Barna-Furbo Tournament, where they reached the quarter-finals.
They were beaten by a very strong Craughwell side, who proved this by winning
the tournament. However, this doesn't take away from the huge success had
by this Under-10 team.
All in all, it was definitely Salthill
Hurling Club's best year yet, but you can bet there will be even better.
