History & Folklore

Cahersiveen - which means The Town of Little Sarah is the birthplace of Daniel O'Connell -The Liberator, and Sigerson Clifford the famous poet and songwriter.

The Skelligs

Your visit to the area is not complete without a trip to the World Famous Skellig Michael and the Small Skellig.

12km out to sea and 700ft high The Skelligs are the world's finest example of early Christian monastic architecture in the form of 1400 year old stone built cells, oratories, terraces and stairways.

In summer visitors to the Great Skelligs pass by small Skellig which is home to 23,000 pairs of Gannets and a wide variety of bird life including the Puffin.

Cahergal(left) and Leacanabuaile(right)

These are two of a group of three cahers (ring forts) located on the outskirts of Cahersiveen in an area known locally as "Over The Water".

These are well worth a visit along with a trip to Ballycarbery Castle which is also close by.

For those who are interested in the Jurassic, the earliest fossilised footprints of a tetrapod ever found in Europe (385 million years old) were discovered on Valentia Island.
