Cahersiveen - which means The Town of Little Sarah is
the birthplace of Daniel O'Connell -The Liberator, and Sigerson Clifford the
famous poet and songwriter.
The Skelligs
Your
visit to the area is not complete without a trip to the World Famous Skellig
Michael and the Small Skellig.
12km
out to sea and 700ft high The Skelligs are the world's finest example of early
Christian monastic architecture in the form of 1400 year old stone built cells,
oratories, terraces and stairways.
In
summer visitors to the Great Skelligs pass by small Skellig which is home to
23,000 pairs of Gannets and a wide variety of bird life including the Puffin.

These
are two of a group of three cahers (ring forts) located on the outskirts of
Cahersiveen in an area known locally as "Over The Water".
These
are well worth a visit along with a trip to Ballycarbery Castle which is also
close by.
For those who are interested in the Jurassic, the
earliest fossilised footprints of a tetrapod ever found in Europe (385 million
years old) were discovered on Valentia Island.
