Hurling League

Hurling League 2001 - 2002

The Hurling Year began last September when the Coaches from the schools met together to decide on fixtures and venues for the year.

There were five teams in the Peter Newman League this year, Marino, Baldoyle, Scoil Mochua, C.R.C and Sandymount. Every team played eight games during the year. Points were awarded-3 for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for losing.

Sandymount played their eight games and finished at the top of the table with eighteen points. It was a great Achievment for all involved. This meant that Sandymount had qualified for the final.

There was great excitement around the school in the build up the Final. Pupils made beautiful banners and signs. A Cheerleading team was set up and could be heard practising at lunch time. When the day arrived, everybody had dressed in red and white and many had their faces painted. Breda, a special needs assistant, made headbands for all.

"We practised for Cheerleading about twice or three times a week.We sang songs about the team and the team players. The cheerleading got everybody singing, clapping and cheering.I think that the Cheerleading team really helped the hurling teams. It was great fun." By Barbara

Six buses left Sandymount and headed to the Irish Wheelchair Association in Clontarf.Baldoyle school came through a tough play off against CRC to qualify for the final. We knew that we would have a difficult game against this great team.

Eight minutes into the first half, Baldoyle scored a goal. Despite many brilliant attempts from Sandymount, this goal remained the only score of the match and Baldoyle were the champions. We were very disappointed and some tears were shed! However, it was a great League and there is always next year.!!

" There were lots of good games this year. My best game was against Marino. We won 5 - 1. I think that the team has improved during the year. Brian, the goalie got better at stopping the ball and better at kicking the ball. We finished on top of the table with 18 points." by Robert, team captain

" We trained for hurling twice a week I think I have improved on my skills during the year. I Am better at passing the ball. I think that the game against Scoil Mochua was my best game because they were easy to beat. Their defender was easy to get around. I got four goals in that game.Sandymount school got top of the table and I was delighted."

Hurling blitz 2001

On Thursday, the 10th of June 2001, the Sandymount School Hurling Team set off for the I.W.A. Clontarf.  Five schools were taking part in the Blitz, Marino in Bray, Scoil Mochua, C.R.C. St. Mary's Baldoyle and ourselves.

Our school team played brilliantly and secured a place in the final.  Unfortunately, we met our match in the C.R.C. team.  They were the winners of the 'Peter Newman' trophy.

A great day was had by all!!
