Aims
Schull Community College has always been very aware of its role, and responsibilities as a community college. The College has established a number of aims which most clearly fulfill this function.

1. The Personal Development of the Student

The school seeks to provide a firm moral and disciplinary structure within which a caring environment can develop and pupils have the freedom to grow and learn. The school recognises the importance of individual development and promotes this through encouraging self-respect, self-confidence, self-discipline, self-reliance and self-motivation, the development of consideration for others, together with promotion of the moral and spiritual values needed in a changing society.

2. The Intellectual Development of the Student

To enable students to achieve the highest academic standards of which they are capable and to translate these standards into appropriate qualifications either to proceed to further education or to avail of employment opportunities when they leave the school. To this end the school provides a balanced general curriculum within which the individual's intellectual and creative potential can be developed to the full.

3. The Social Development of the Students

(a) Social Education: To develop and encourage social, cultural and recreational skills and interests, so as to enable pupils to play their full part as responsible citizens.

(b) Clubs, Teams: To provide appropriate opportunities both in and out of school and over as wide a range as possible, for team, group and individual activities.

(c) Visits, Courses: To promote residential and day visits and courses, locally, nationally and abroad.

(d) Skills for Life: To equip pupils with a working knowledge of institutions and of skills needed in adult life and to impart an appreciation of the technological and scientific world.

(e) Leisure: To encourage the active and beneficial use of private leisure time.

4. The Close Involvement of the School in the Community

-To make the school an integral part of the whole community from which it draws its pupils, and of the wider community of society, by seeking:

- To involve parents closely in their children's education and in the wider aspects of school life, and to establish a partnership between home and school.

- To meet the educational needs of the whole community within the limits of the staff and resources available.

- To promote all kinds of service to the community, whether by groups or individuals, in or out of school.

- To encourage appropriate involvement in the school by members of the community.

- To maximise community use of school premises, grounds and facilities, provided only that this use is not to the detriment of the school itself.

From its small roots, the College has grown to a stage where it now caters for the needs of approximately 400 students, male and female, drawn from all over the Mizen peninsula and from further afield. A wide range of ethnic and social backgrounds within the student population ensures that inter-student contact is always an enriching experience.
