SCIATH na SCOL.

Scoil Mhuire Lourdes, Carrigaline.

The Carrigaline Boys School team made their debut in the juvenile section of the Cork Schools Shield Competition when they played Carrigtwohill on Saturday June 12 1904 at the G.A.A. Grounds, Turners Cross Cork. Their teacher/coach was Micheal Wrin N.T..

Recent History shows that Carrigaline re-entered the Sciath na Scoil Football Competition in March 1987. Since then the school has competed in both the Hurling and Football competitions each year. Success has been achieved in both codes.

In 1990 the school won the Roinn B football with a team which included Nicholas Murphy, Kieran Connolly and Jason Wallace All three represented the Cork Minor Footballers in 1996, while Kieran and Nicholas were also on the 1995 Cork Minor football team and subsequently played with the Cork U21 squad. Indeed, Nicholas has been a mainstay of the Cork Senior football team for the last few years.

In 1992 the school won the Roinn C Hurling competition with a team which included Colin Horgan and Peter Murphy who represented Cork at Minor level.

Further success followed in June 2000 with victory in Roinn B hurling. Of that team Niall Coakley and Stephen Corcoran have represented Cork at underage level.

The school Football team qualified for the final of Roinn C football Competition this year. In a very close and exciting final they ran out deserving winners against Ovens N.S., winning by three points.

Scoil Mhuire Lourdes has also been participating in Carrigdhoun Sciath na Scoil competition since the mid 1980s. The school team have won the Group A hurling Blitz in 92, 98 and 2001. The Roinn A football competition has been won in 87, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97 and 1998.

Our sixth class pupils organised an interview with ex-pupil and current Cork Senior Footballer, Nicholas Murphy. Here is their report.

Nicholas attended our school from 1982-1990. He played Sciath na Scol Hurling and Football for two years winning a Football Title in 1990. Honours won with Cork include Munster Senior Football Medals in 1999 and 2002. In 1999 Nicholas also won a National Football League Medal and a Railway Cup Football medal.

Throughout his career to date he has been very fortunate not to have sustained any serious injuries. His greatest sporting moment so far was the 1999 Munster Final victory over Kerry. His ambition now is to win an All-Ireland medal and to continue enjoying the game. Although best known as a midfielder, he also likes to play centre and full forward. When he finishes playing he hopes to train younger players. As well as Gaelic Football he also enjoys playing Hurling, Basketball, Soccer, Tennis and Golf.

On "pay for play" he believes that players shouldn't be paid but should be compensated for loss of wages. He said "You must love playing the game or else you won't enjoy playing".

His advice to young players is to "Enjoy the game, train hard and to listen to your trainers: Don't be afraid to try things but always remember it's a team game".
