Hiroki Suigmura is (in my opinion) one of the most important sub-characters in the movie. Its such a shame that he doesn't get the credit he deserves. Of the two main sub-plots (Mimura's plot being the other one), Sugimura's is the most interesting. Here we have a boy who for a long time, maybe years has loved a girl but never even approached her before.

Sugimura was with Chigusa Takako at the time, and its clear that although he loved Chigusa, it wasn't the same kind of love he had for Kotohiki. The notion of the ultimatum that Hiroki is handed is fascinating. He KNOWS that he will die. I don't think he questioned whether or not he would throughout the game. With this knowledge he sets about confessing to both girls on his love for them


He tell Chigusa that he loves her, but its clear he loves her as a friend. As Chigusa is dying, she tells him he looks "really cool", to which he replies "You're coolest girl in the world". I had talked before in the Chigusa profile about how important this line is. However, it also shows us what exactly Sugimura thinks of Chigusa. Much like Chigusa, he too can't express his true feelings for her so he uses a juvenile way of expressing them.


Sugimura's 2 or so days on the island were completely spent searching for the girls. You've got to admit that the guy had determination. Battered and bruised, he finally finds Kotohiki but in a desperate and foolish act, she shoots him many times, thinking he was a threat to her. Sugimura lies wounded in the puddle and finally tells her the words he had been waiting to say. Its funny that when she asks "Why? Sugimura Why?", he replies in much the same juvenile way as he did earlier "You're so cute". Its a humourous line, but a sad one at that. In his final breath, he finds the courage to tell her how he feels.


"I've been in love with you, Kotohiki, for a very, very long time..."

Kotohiki stands shocked at this revelation. She had killed a boy who had these feelings for her and she never knew. He never even talked to her.... What was she to do now........enter Mitsuko....
