SALESIANS IN MALTA

 While efforts were made to have Don Bosco send his Salesians to Malta, it was only in the time of Don Rua, Don Bosco’s first successor, that a firm move was taken. Sligo man Fr Patrick O’Grady, a one-time pupil of Don Bosco, was the first Rector of the magnificent Salesian School in Sliema (Malta), begun in 1903. It has produced many vocations for Malta, the Middle East, Australia, etc. In 1920, an oratory, in honour of St Alphonsus, was begun and, in 1947, another in the neighbouring island of Gozo.
Having originally been a part of the Sicilian Province and later part of the Great Britain GBR Province, in 1981 Malta became part of the Dublin Province. In 2013, Tunisia passed to the Sicilian Province. At present there are five houses in Malta.
Set up as a Provincial Delegation in 1980, Salesian work in Malta is directed by the Provincial Delegate with the help of a Delegation Council.

Savio College Buskett Road, Dingle DGL 2702, Malta

Established in 1968 and dedicated to St Dominic Savio, Dingli houses a secondary school, the Pre-novitiate and Post-novitiate Formation community, Oratory, Retreat centre, Salesian Cooperator centre, Salesian Pastoral Youth Services [SPYS] (see below) and provides help in local parishes.
SPYS is a voluntary group of experienced religious and lay youth leaders, that provides: Youth Service for 16 years and Upwards; Youth Training Seminars; Follow-up Sessions; Animation of various Youth Centres on the Island; Youth Spirituality Encounters; Adult Training Weekends. It also contributes articles on youth affairs to the Maltese Salesian Bulletin.

Established in 1988, Osanna Pia is a Hostel for young people in difficulty and a Youth pastoral centre.
