Victory for Cappawhite Boys

On Thursday November 18th 1999 , the boys from Cappawhite National School wrote their names into the history books. They became the first team from the school to win a county title in the Schools competition. For a school over a hundred years old, it was fitting that the long wait was ended by one of the best football games ever witnessed.

The final , against Boherlahan N.S. , was a great game from the outset. Big match nerves seemed to unsettle the "Cappa" boys and it took the a while to settle. Despite playing with a strong wind , Cappawhite trailed 1-4 to 0-2 at half time. However in the second half, the boys displayed their true fighting qualities. An early point from Peter Buckley narrowed the gap, but Boherlahan scored a goal, leaving a margin of seven points with only nine minutes remaining.

Two goals in two minutes from Paul Fitzgerald brought Cappawhite to within a point of their opponents, but Boherlahan rallied to score another point. With time almost up, Michael R. Buckley scored agoal to put Cappawhite ahead, but great credit is due to Boherlahan for scoring the equalising point.

Full time score: Boherlahan 2-6, Cappawhite 3-3.

Extra time then followed, with Cappawhite snatching victory with two great points from play - the first from Michael P. Buckley and the winning score from Captain, Paul Fitzgerald.

Well done boys!!
