DES Long, Vice President, Republican Sinn Féin, condemned the arrest of a young man at an educational seminar organised by Republican Sinn Féin in Limerick on January 26.
He said the arrest and detention is the latest incident of intimidation
and harassment by the Gardaí against the organisation.
“We in Republican Sinn Fein have been subject to the most appalling harassment by the Special Branch and this latest detention is merely another attempt by them to frighten off supports of the organisation.
“The educational seminar was attended by potential members from Limerick,
Clare, Tipperary, Cork and Kerry who support the policies of Republican
Sinn Féin.
The young man detained by the police was asked his name and, even though
he gave it he was still arrested. We view this type of conduct by the Special
Branch as mere intimidation and an attempt to prevent young people from
supporting Republican Sinn Féin.
“Past experience teaches us that even with all these disreputable activities being undertaken by the Special Branch, young Irish men and women will still support the Republican view that the real cause of conflict in our country is the presence of British troops in the occupied Six Counties.
“We will not be intimidated from saying that real peace will only come when the British withdraw from Ireland,” Des Long said.
