Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, President, Republican Sinn Féin, said on January 15, 2002 that the bail conditions placed on January 14 on six of the men arrested in a house in Limerick on December 17 that they “do not take part in Republican Sinn Féin activity” seeks in effect to criminalise the work of a long-established political organisation. The statement continued: “We believe that this is an attempt to stigmatise Republican Sinn Féin because of its opposition to the Stormont Agreement which formally recognises British rule in Ireland.
“A member of An Ard-Chomhairle, the Chairperson of Munster, two delegates to Comhairle na Mumhan and two members of the Brugha-Sabhat Cumann in Limerick have been prohibited from selling our monthly newspaper SAOIRSE, fundraising, engaging in publicity, organisational activity and agitation on local and national issues.
“Further, they are debarred from participation in any re-run of the Nice Treaty campaign or any other referendum and the whole array of political activity including long-range preparations for the next local elections in 2004 and the promotion of our ÉIRE NUA proposals for a new four province federal Ireland.
“The State has demanded and obtained the partial disruption of Republican Sinn Féin through the bringing of political charges to a non-jury court. The trial may not take place for 18 months and meanwhile these key members are specifically prevented from normal political activity.
“What price now freedom of expression and the right to communicate and
receive political ideas (Article 19, Universal Declaration of Human Rights),”
the statement ended.
