AT A meeting of Republican Sinn Féin activists in Monaghan town on January 21, the Comhairle Uladh (Ulster Executive) denounced the ongoing attacks on the nationalist population throughout the Six Counties, the internment of party members and increased police harassment and covert surveillance of legitimate political activity. In reference to unrest throughout north Belfast in recent times, Chairperson Joe O’Neill stated:
“The malignant sectarianism we are experiencing in Ardoyne and throughout
north Belfast stems from the British Crown involvement in our country and
it will never be eradicated until their departure is but a memory. This
disease is the result of the divide and rule strategies of the British
occupation, and like Dr Frankenstein they have created a monster that is
beyond their control. The promise of the ÉIRE NUA document is that
all Irish people of all denominations can come together to devise their
own destinies, working side by side and guaranteeing prosperity and well
being for all. Éire Nua is the promise of a life without sectarianism.”
During the course of a far reaching agenda, the issue of the anniversary
of the First All-Ireland Dáil was raised, at which point Mr O’Neill
said:
“It is sad that during the time that we celebrate the 83rd anniversary of the 1st All-Ireland Dáil Éireann, we see the Provisionals moving into the palace of Westminster with nothing but words separating them from their seats. With the surrender of weapons and the certainty of absorption into the PSNI, we again reiterate our call on these dissidents to relinquish the name of Sinn Féin.”
The Ulster Executive condemned the continuing harassment of Republicans
in Fermanagh where the PSNI have impounded eight motor vehicles and all
members were told not to allow themselves to be intimidated by the upsurge
in police and military surveillance operations. Upon the election of the
new youth officer for the province, the meeting ended.
