WITH regret we record the death on January 17 of Mrs Elizabeth Doherty, long-time republican supporter, of Drumderglin, Carrigallen, Co Leitrim. She kept open house throughout her life for the freedom fighters from British-occupied Ireland. Among those who enjoyed her hospitality was Pat McManus of Fermanagh who gave his life for Ireland on July 15, 1958.Born Elizabeth Brennan ninety-two years ago, her late husband Eddie Doherty was involved with the Movement in the 1930s and 1940s.
In later years she supported the Cause through raffle tickets, calendars, SAOIRSE and subscriptions to the Prisoners’ Dependants Fund. A picture of Comdt-General Tom Maguire hung in the living room of her house.
When visited in St Patrick’s Hospital, Carrick-on-Shannon by her old friend, Councillor Seán Lynch, Elizabeth Doherty told him: “I’ll never change; keep the Republic safe.”
At the removal on January 18 and the funeral next day her coffin was
draped in the Irish Tricolour, placed there by her devoted family.
Sincere sympathy is expressed to her daughter Monica Masterson and
to her grandchildren.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.
