THERE is now a compelling case for the establishment of an Independent Commission to investigate the growing number of complaints of misconduct against the Gardaí, the Brugha-Sabhat Cumann of of Republican Sinn Féin in Limerick stated on 21 January.Spokesperson Timmy King said that public confidence in the force is being shaken on a regular basis by revelations of corruption, lies and perjury on the part of the Gardaí involved in court cases.
“Even the judges are now losing patience with the Gardaí,” said Mr. King. “The days of the Gardaí investigating complaints against fellow Gardaí must be brought to an end if public confidence is to be repaired.”
“There can be no justification for the continued practice of Gardaí being in charge of complaints from the public in relation to the conduct of their colleagues. What is needed is a completely independent body with full powers to investigate all complaints against the Gardaí in a professional and detached manner.
“To use their own expression, the innocent Gardaí have nothing
to fear from the setting up of such a Commission and in fact they should
welcome it because it will remove the shadow of suspicion from all those
decent hardworking men and women who have never abused and assaulted people
in custody and who have never told lies or falsehoods in court or committed
perjury.”
