Swimmers aid Republican prisoners' fund

EIGHTEEN swimmers braved the icy waters of the Grand Canal on Christmas Day to raise funds for CABHAIR, Irish Republican Prisoners Dependants Fund. There should have been 19 but a swimmer – John Callaghan – turned up on a pair of crutches. We wish him a speedy return to full ‘walking’.

First into the water was Dave Mulligan from Lucan followed by Lar O’Brien, Paul Byrne and Eddie Douglas from Ballyfermot. Next to plunge in were Keith Fitzpatrick, Joe Tucker, Jason Gilligan, Gavin Cording, Joe Doyle, Steo Clarke, Eoin Doyle and Gerry Casey.

From Lincoln in England came Micháel Ó Leogain (complete with his own Tricolour) to brave the elements for the POWs followed by two swimmers from Crumlin, Garreth Byrne and Carl Stone. Then we had a mystery swimmer from Driminagh who after the swim had a drop of ‘lemonade’ and made his way off home without giving his name.

Next came Padraig Callaghan from Bluebell – brother of John – who kept up the family tradition.Jonathan Bermingham from the city centre was the final swimmer.

Finally thanks to Bernard and the Christmas crew for the fire, music system, flag and banners; to the people who supplied all present with mince pies, crisps and sandwiches; to all the other people who made this, the Silver Swim – 25th Anniversary the fantastic success it was. The 18 swimmers earned their keep at the event and some of them [almost] enjoyed it!!

CABHAIR asks those that sponsored a swimmer to return the few bob (or Euro) as soon as they can.

And finally thanks to the 200 on-lookers who turned up and a special mention to young Dillon who was present with his parents.
