Derry relatives object to screening of RUC

AFTER thirty years’ fight for justice the British Establishment is still erecting stumbling blocks to any effective inquiry into the Bloody Sunday massacre.
The only sister of Bloody Sunday victim Gerard Donaghy told a Crown judge on February 11 why it was so important to her to be able to see RUC personnel as they gave their evidence to the Saville Inquiry.
Mrs Mary Doherty, whose brother was 17-years-old when he was shot dead along with 13 other unarmed civilians on January 30, 1972, said she wanted to see the faces and demeanour of the witnesses.

In a sworn affidavit before the High Court in Belfast during a judicial review into Judge Saville’s decision to allow 19 RUC men to give their evidence from behind screens, Mary Doherty said:

“Their evidence is for us crucial to establishing the truth of the reasons why and the circumstances in which our loved ones died.”
After his death, Gerard Donaghy was found to have nail bombs in four of his pockets.

Saying there was “compelling evidence these devices were planted” by British Crown Forces, Mary Doherty said: “The large wooden box in which RUC officers will give their evidence prevents me from seeing their faces and their  demeanour.”

Dismissing the Crown Forces plea that RUC men feared for their safety, she said: “It appears to us that we are some type of threat to witnesses who are only giving evidence in an inquiry we have fought so hard for.

“We have publicly and consistently said that none should feel under threat by coming to Derry to give their evidence.

“This applies as equally to current or former RUC officers as it applies to current or former members of the British army.”
