THE growing abuse of heroin in Limerick is an underlying cause of an upsurge in robberies and attacks on householders in the Southside of the city, the local branch of Republican Sinn Fein claimed on February 20.Munster Executive spokesman Joe Lynch said that the increased use of heroin is having a destructive effect on communities such as Ballinacurra Weston and Prospect where gangs of vandals are conducting what can only be described as a reign of terror.
”There has been a huge number of house break-ins and robberies in recent weeks and according to the information coming to us, one of the reasons is the growing addiction to heroin of many young people in these areas.
”The emergence of heroin abuse is a worrying trend because it bears
a direct link to the crime figures as young people engage in criminal activities
to fund their addiction. In addition to the series of robberies,
many people have been attacked in their homes and other men and women have
been attacked without
any provocation.
”We are now calling on those involved in such behaviour to cease forthwith and seek help if they have a drug problem.”
