Republican  Sinn  Féin  rejects  ‘Provisional  attempt to  co-opt  it  into  election  campaign’

A MEETING of Comhairle Ceantair Roscomáin of Republican Sinn Féin was held in Elphin on February 14. Represented were six Cumainn: Elphin, Strokestown, Kilglass, Arigna, West Roscommon and South Roscommon.
It was decided to reply to allegations in the local press of January 30 by Provisional Sinn Féin: “There are no ‘links’, close or otherwise between Republican Sinn Féin and the Provos and the question of “enhancing” such does not therefore arise.

“Our attitude to the Provisionals is the same as our position regarding Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, the Workers’ Party or any other grouping which parted company with us down the years when they accepted the partitionist assemblies at Leinster House and Stormont and ultimately the British Parliament at Westminster.

“We stand by the generations of Republicans who struggled and sacrificed for the freedom and unity of Ireland which these institutions deny. We assert our resolve to continue to work for Irish national independence and will not be diverted from the revolutionary path on to a constitutional road which ends in total absorption into British rule in Ireland.

“Our comrades in the Barney Casey-Martin Hurson Cumann of Republican Sinn Féin in Longford, headed by Councillor Seán Lynch, former Chairperson of the County Council there, are of course at one with us in this matter.

“The Comhairle Ceantair rejects an effort to co-opt our organisation into what appears to be the forthcoming general election campaign in the 26 Counties by those who abandoned our Cause in 1986 together with their recent adherents from Fianna Fáil.

“The meeting heard reports of successful fund-raising activities over the Christmas and New Year period for the welfare and support of the families of the Republican prisoners in Maghaberry Prison, Co Antrim and in Portlaoise jail.

“Preparations were made to support the upcoming Easter Commemoration ceremonies at the Co Roscommon IRA Memorial, Elphin, at Ballinlough and in Kiltrustan Cemetery at the grave of Lieut Michael Mullooly IRA.”

The statement was signed by Farrell Conry, Cathaoirleach, Pádraic Cryan, Rúnaí and Dermot Mullooly, Cisteoir.
