REPUBLICAN Sinn Féin in Belfast staged a picket at Maghaberry prison on March 1. Around 50 people attended the picket at 11am. Relatives and friends of the POWs took part.At one stage the wardens at the prison gates tried to force traffic out through the prison gates but the protesters refused to move. One of the screws threatened to have the protesters removed by force. The picketers still refused to move and the screws withdrew and closed the gates. The prison was put on lock-down for an hour.
On ending the protest Republican Sinn Féin called on everyone to step up the struggle for political status. Republican Sinn Féin also condemned the censorship policy being carried out against the issue of political status and the plight of Republican POWs by the news media.
Geraldine Taylor, Ard Chomhairle, Republican Sinn Féin said that the news media lack the courage of their convictions. “These media outlets are not striving for truth, in fact they are quite willing to work a system of censorship.
“We have witnessed this all too often, and again today. We informed the media and press of today’s protest but where are they? Censorship is very much alive, we are witness to that, Section 31 is not dead.”
The picket was fully supported by the Republican POWs in Maghaberry
jail who sent greetings to everyone taking part.
