LAWYERS representing the family of a Belfastman shot dead by the British colonial police (RUC) in 1992 have called into question the fairness of the inquest into his death following a series of delaying tactics by the RUC/PSNI.On February 12 the coroner for greater Belfast, John Leckey confirmed that 160 out of 240 witness statements had been withheld by the RUC/PSNI.
In a letter to Madden and Finucane solicitors who are acting for the family of Pearse Jordan, John Leckey said: “Last Friday I was advised by an officer from the PSNI that the investigation into the death of Patrick Pearse Jordan generated approximately 240 witness statements.
“I had been provided with about 80 and my firm understanding was that this constituted all the witness statements. I was surprised to learn that this was not the case.”
The coroner said he is due to receive the remaining 160 witness statements as well as copies of radio transmissions and note-book entries. Adding that the Crown solicitor’s officer will furnish the family solicitors with copies of the documents.
Gerry Hyland from Madden and Finucane solicitors said: “The failure to provide all the material to us and the coroner continues to call into question the fairness of the inquest and will cause further delay.”
Twenty-one-year-old Pearse Jordan was killed on November 25, 1992.
As he was driving along the Falls Road in west Belfast he was confronted by two unmarked cars behind and to the left of him, ramming his vehicle onto the footpath.
As he tried to flee the scene on foot he was met with a hail of bullets from a Heckler and Koch rifle (a weapon favoured by the RUC).
Witnesses claimed that four men from the RUC undercover unit then ran over and kicked the dying man as he lay on the ground.
The inquest into Pearse Jordan’s death is due to begin this month.
