Compelling case for Garda Ombudsman

THERE is now a compelling case for the establishment of a full time Independent Commission to investigate the growing number of complaints of misconduct against the Gardai, Republican Sinn Fein stated on February 12.
“In the wake of the decision today to probe the Donegal situation, other cases must also be examined,” said Munster Executive spokesperson Joe Lynch who added that the recent Colm Murphy trial had uncovered fabrication of evidence by 26-County police.

“Even the judges are now losing patience with the Gardai,” he said. “The days of the Gardai investigating complaints against fellow police must be brought to an end if public confidence is to be repaired. Public confidence in the force is being shaken on a regular basis by revelations of corruption, lies and perjury on the part of the police involved in court cases.

“There can be no justification for the continued practice of the police being in charge of complaints from the public in relation to the conduct of their colleagues.  What is needed in addition to this Tribunal announced today is a completely independent body with full powers to investigate all complaints against the Gardai in a professional and detached manner.

“To use their own expression, the innocent police have nothing to fear from the setting up of such a Commission and in fact they should welcome it because it will remove the shadow of suspicion from all those decent hardworking men and women who have never abused and assaulted people in custody and who have never told lies or falsehoods in court or committed perjury.”
