Brit Land Rovers hit woman

ON February 4 at around 1pm, two British army land rovers were driven into Broad Street, Magherafelt in a reckless manner and total disregard for Irish citizens.

Jennifer Ewing, a married woman with three children had just stepped out onto the pedestrian crossing when the first of two Land Rovers hit her, knocking her into the air coming down to land onto the bonnet of the Land Rover, falling onto the road.

Mrs Ewing lay badly injured on the road as the Land Rover that hit her drove on followed by the second vehicle. She was later taken to hospital where she was treated for a broken leg and foot as well as a number of fractures and other injuries.

In a statement a local representative for Republican Sinn Féin said: "On February 4 Jennifer Ewing fell victim to occupation forces total disregard for Irish citizens, but, this disregard for life and limb can be found all over the Occupied Counties as armoured cars and Land Rovers race through nationalist areas. "The danger is very real when it comes to children playing in the racing ground of Occupation Forces."

CIRA: ‘No alliance’

IN A statement reported in the Irish Times on February 21 the Continuity IRA denied setting up any alliance with the so-called ‘Real’ IRA.

The Continuity IRA source told the Irish Times: "We have no animosity towards the 'Real' IRA but we are two entirely separate organisations and that is the way we will stay. There is no question of even co-operating with the 'Real' IRA."

500 pipe bomb attacks in three years

PRO-British elements have been responsible for nearly 500 pipe bomb attacks on the nationalist community since the year 2000.

The statistics that were released by the British colonial police (RUC/PSNI) in mid February do not include the hundreds of blast and petrol bombs and other devices that were used by loyalists on an almost daily basis. In the year 2000, 21 pipe bombs exploded and 46 defused by Crown Forces engineers. The following year the number soared with 126 explosions and the same number defused. Last year 94 pipe bombs exploded and 65 were defused. In the first seven weeks of the year five of the devices exploded and six were made safe.

PSNI/RUC arrests

THE McKelvey/Steele Cumann of Republican Sinn Féin in Belfast have condemned the continuing harassment of its members by the PSNI/RUC.

"Four of our members were arrested in different parts of Belfast on Monday, March 10. All four were later released without charge," the Cumann said in a statement.

"Whilst others talk of peace, we in Republican Sinn Féin have been subjected to early morning raids and the arrest and holding of our members. Others will tell you the Peace Process has brought us 'forward'. Our experience is of the same harassment that dates back to the beginning of our struggle."

Swiss overflights ban

THE Swiss government decided on February 21 last that it would allow only humanitarian and medical overflights of its territory by American military planes. It would allow surveillance and reconnaissance flights also, strictly in the context of UN decisions to carry out reconnaissance inspections over Iraq.

The decision of the Swiss government bans all US or British overflights of a military nature, with troops, munitions and war material. In the event of Washington and London declaring war without UN sanctions the Swiss law on neutrality will be automatically and strictly applied. Should a military offensive be authorized by the UN the Swiss federal government may decide of developments.

Incinerator decision opposed

REPUBLICAN Sinn Féin Assistant PRO Des Dalton on March 4 expressed Republican Sinn Féin's opposition to the decision of An Bord Pleanala to give the go-ahead to the building of the first waste incinerator in the 26 Counties near Duleek,Co Meath.

“This decision of An Bord Pleanala flies in the face of public opinion, is an assault on local democracy and can only be interpreted as an ill- thought out endorsement of incineration as a means of waste disposal. Once again the current 26 County administration has shown its contempt for public health and the environment as it continues to put profit over people.” Des Dalton said.

NEW DEMOCRACY,
NEW IRELAND

AT A press conference in the Conway Mill, Belfast on February 11 Ruairí Ó Brádaigh launched a new document from Republican Sinn FéLin:

An Address to the People of Ireland

‘EIGHTY-one years after the partition of Ireland in 1922, and almost five years after the Stormont Agreement of 1998, Republican Sinn Féin, on the basis of a resolution passed at our annual Ard-Fheis held in October, 2002, wishes to address the Irish People on the current national position.

We wish to address the people of Ulster in particular and to make a special appeal to people of the Unionist persuasion . . .

Bernadette deported

IN A statement on February 24, Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, President, Republican Sinn Féin deplored the deportation of veteran Civil Rights campaigner Bernadette McAliskey from the United States the previous weekend.

The statement said: “For over 35 years Ms McAliskey has struggled for human and civil rights. The action of the US Administration in denying her freedom of speech and access to the Irish American community and the American people in general is a shame and a disgrace and should be exposed publicly as such.

“For many years now, Irish Republicans have been refused admission to the US. Since 1974, the President of Republican Sinn Féin has been in that category. Others have included Des Long, Vice-President and Joe O'Neill, National Treasurer.

“This has meant that the ÉIRE NUA programme for a new four-province Federal Ireland, with maximum devolution to local level, cannot be advocated in the United States as an alternative to the Stormont Agreement of 1998.

“Now Bernadette McAliskey, articulate and courageous spokesperson for Irish national and civil rights, has been excluded also. Will those on both sides of the Atlantic who profess to espouse freedom of speech, now come out in support of her?

“Republican Sinn Féin wishes her well in her fight to vindicate her basic human rights,” the statement concluded.

No connection with other groups

A STATEMENT on February 20 from the PRO Comhairle Uladh (Ulster Executive), Republican Sinn Féin said: “We wish to state once again, in view of recent accusations to the contrary, that Republican Sinn Féin HAS NOT in the past, IS NOT now and WILL NOT cooperate with the 32 County Sovereignty Movement or any other similar grouping.”

Basque newspaper closed by Spanish police

ON February 20, 2003, the only existing Basque-language daily newspaper Euskaldunon Egunkaria was shut down and 10 people of its current or former staff were arrested for "supporting an armed group".

The Spanish Civil Guard carried out a large-scale raid on both the newspaper's headquarters in Andoain (Gipuzkoa), and local press offices in Iruñea (Pamplona), Bilbo and Gasteiz (Vitoria), which they then sealed.

Apart from getting into the four offices of the newspaper, the Civil Guard also searched other places, such as two Basque magazines: the weekly Argia and the linguistic and cultural publication Jakin. From both places, they took away a lot of documents and computers. Moreover, the federation of Basque private schools was also searched because one of the arrested journalists is the schools communications coordinator.
