Movie Classics

Updated: 12/10/2006

Here is a basic List of films you should see if you haven't and see again if you have. This list will (hopefully) grow over time. Once a film makes it in, it doesn't come out. Will try to add more details to each title, as I find time (if ever)

Email your classics and see if the make it up here, after reminding me of the movies I have missed: seansshack@oceanfree.net

A:

Aliens (1986) : The only time the makers made effective use of the Alien universe, putting them up against marines and making it into a war. Better than the original and any of the remakes since. High concept at its finest. 5/5

Air Force One (1997): Dumb as hell, but doesn't pretend to be anything else. Action and fun. Plain and simple. 4/5

As Good as It gets: The perfect cast combined with the perfect screenplay, evolves into an excellent movie. 5/5

B:

Back To The Future (1,2 &3) 5/5

Batman Begins (2004): 5/5

Bourne Identity, The (2002) 4/5

C:

Cast Away (2000): You would never believe it would work, but does. 4/5

Crash (2005):  A little new to be referred to as a classic. But give it a look. 5/5

D:

Deer Hunter, The  4/5

Die Hard 5/5

E:

Empire Strikes Back (1980). Always used as the benchmark for movie sequels. This was a much better movie than the first, darker and more grown up. 5/5

E.T. -- The Extra-Terrestrial 4/5

Enemy of the State (1998) 4/5

F:

Forrest Gump (1994) 4/5

Finding Nemo (2003) 4/5

Face/Off (1997) 4/5

G:

GoodFellas 5/5

Good Will Hunting (1997) 5/5

Godfather, The 4/5

Gladiator (2000): The perfect movie in every respect. Watch it and see how to make a movie appeal to both the male and female audience. Crowe is simply perfect in his performance. 5/5

H:

I:

In the Line of Fire (1993) 4/5

In her Shoes (2005) 5/5

J:

Jaws (1975): The original Summer Blockbuster. A classic movie by every means. Perfection. 5/5

Jurassic Park (1993): The real birth of CGI and nothing since has used it as well. 5/5

Jerry Maguire (1996) 4/5

K:

L:

Leon (1994): Luc Besson at his best , before wasting his time on Fifth Element and Joan of Arc. A great combination of European and American culture. Look out for the painfully (beautiful) and talented Natalie Portman. 5/5

Lost In Translation: Slow paced, but well developed movie. Concerned chiefly with being married but still being lonely. Murray at his best, although should have been allowed to be funnier.  4/5

Lord of The Rings (1,2 & 3) 4/5

Last Samurai, The (2003): Cruise turns in a masterful performance once again. Very visual, great action and story. 5/5

M:

Monsters, Inc. (2001) 4/5

Matrix, The (1999): The start and much better than the sequels combined.  5/5

Munich(2005) 5/5

N:

O:

Open Range: The return to the Western and return to form for Costener. Bit of an air of unforgiven about the killer lead. But great western none the less. 4/5

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest 5/5

P:

Pulp Fiction: Tarintinos assault on the scenes. With more dialogue that you could possibly handle. The ultra violent wise kid proved his wasn't a one hit wonder, with this, possibly his best work to date. 5/5

Pirates of The Caribbean: Johnny Depp is masterful as his portrayal of sparrow. His performance is worth watching. The rest is standard affair. Good effects, good cast, OK story. The sequels have a lot to live up to. 4/5

Planet Of The Apes: Original and the best (remake is awful). The hunt scene alone scared you to death. Lost it impact over the years, but aged rather well. The definitive twist at the end. 5/5

Platoon (1986) 4/5

Q:

R:

Reservoir Dogs (1991): Quentin Tarantino's début movie. The style of this movie has been so often copied, but never as good. Stylish with a capital S.5/5

Raiders Of the Lost Ark: 5/5

Rain Man (1988) 4/5

Ransom (1996) 4/5

Rock, The (1996) 4/5

Ring, The (2002) 4/5

Road to Perdition (2002): Very under rated. Excellent style with a great cast. Hanks just keeps getting better with age.   5/5

ROCKY (1976): Written in three days and shot Sly to instant fame. First was the best. Started to get silly in the sequels. 5/5

S:

Star Wars (1977): The original Star Wars movie. The Empire strikes back was a superior movie. If you want to see a real Star Wars Movie , forget the 1-3 Episodes. 5/5

Shawshank Redemption: 5/5: Finally got voted as the best movie every made. Perfection in every sense of the word. Never made much money on release, but deemed as a classic ever since.

Sixth Sense, The (1999) 5/5

Shrek (2001) 4/5

Saving Private Ryan (1998) 5/5

State of Grace 5/5

Scream (1996) 4/5

Schindler's List: Prefect cinema.  5/5

Someone like you/Animal Attraction. 4/5: Simply for the onscreen charisma between the two leads.

T:

Taxi Driver 5/5

Titanic (1997) 4/5

The Terminator  5/5

Terminator 2: Judgment Day 4/5 (1991)

Time to Kill, A (1996) 5/5

U:

Unforgiven: Simply Eastwood at his best as both actor and director. One of the best westerns ever made. 5/5

V:

W:

What Women Want (2000) 4/5

War Of The Worlds (2004) : Had the potential to be 5/5 movie. Good script with a few plot hole. Great director and star. But hits the mark on most occasions. Strong 9/11 feel of menace throughout. 4/5

X:

X-Men (2000) 5/5

Y:
