PC Gaming

Updated: 25/01/2007

The home p.c was once THE platform the gaming. Although it still covers a large percentage of the market, especially in America. It feel it has lost a lot of ground since the 360 came out.

Why. PC gaming is too expensive and you spend too long patching, tweaking and messing out with online games. Do the same on the 360. Launch and you are in a multiplayer game in a few minutes. Patching is automatic. Tweaking is not needed. All you need do is jump in and play. Perhaps the release of Vista and Xbox live anywhere will make a difference. But not address all the issues. Update the pc graphics card to make use of latest texture offers and framer rates and you will have spent more on a card than an entire 360 system. Yes it is progress and fun to do, but the hole in your pocket may argue. These days I would rather be playing....

This has been helped considerable by the constant hardware updates in processors , 3d cards and soundcards. Admittedly  the cost far outweighs the likes of the PS2 and the XBOX. But the quality is comparison is staggering.

I will be sticking simple no B.S. reviews here, of the games that interest me on the p.c. platform.

Rainbow Six Vegas: Rating 1

This is a clear example of the how bloody bad the pc platform is at gaming. I tested this on a Dell XPS gen 2 laptop with 2 gbs of ram and it played like a dog. Border line slideshow here. Several moments of slow down, and stutter every time you shoot. Tried different resolutions and options. So unless you have a ninja PC or want to play this game with all features turned off. Buy a bloody xbox 360. Amazing difference in quality and thus game play.  I'm sure the PC fan boy's will disagree. But this is a machine that cost a few grand a couple of years back and played everything like a dream. You video card ages and hey presto, you need to buy another or risk paying full price for a game that you won't be able to experience correctly. PC game should be graded on specs and thus price. You pay less the older the machine you have. All you need do is buy a couple of hundred euro's xbox 360.

Half Life Episode 1: Rating 4

Too short and too expensive with much too much of a delay between episodes to keep the player interested and involved in the story. If this is the future of gaming, you can stick it. I prefer not to pay more for a game that is shorter than older games. Apparently so much work has gone into the episodes that half-life 3 may never happen. Again another reason to hate episodic games.

Rainbow Six lockdown Rating: 3
More playstation that Pc game. A very weak sequel and brings the franchise in the realm of arcade game rather than simulation. Pick it up on the cheap. But don't be surprised if you stop playing before you complete it. Wait for Vegas (but expect to need a ninja pc to run it).

Ghost Recon 3: Advanced Warfighter  Rating: 3.5

Starts well and the first person view works better than the xbox version at times. But lacks the polish and advanced engine of the 360 version. Bugged and with a lot of slowdown in places. If you haven't played the 360 version, it is better than the first ghost recon on pc. But could have been a hell of a lot better.
