Updated: 12/10/2006 Ratings 1: avoid -----> 5: Excellent. Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Rating: 3. Another movie I went into with high expectations. Depp's performance in Pirates 1, rates as one of the most 3 dimensional and entertaining piece of acting in living movie history. I would go as far as to rate it along side Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List (memorizing). Hence his part in this movie was the single most important (strange I know as the story usually is). To the most Depp pulls it off. With one exception the all to "return of the Jedi" scene on the spit, which turns into a Wile E Coyote scene. Other performances that shine are Bill Nightly (as always). Bloom and Knightly do their best, but are placed in "running the numbers" type scenes: i.e. playing it safe and following the key elements of the first. Conflict with Jack: check, fight with Knightly:check, Demon sailors: check etc etc I know this is typical with sequels (similar plot and characters: basically the studio playing it safe). But the story and plot here that is basically contrived to put said elements together is just weak. Granted a younger viewer wouldn't care, but his parent sitting beside him will. A good film that again could have been a great one. My expectations for the third are lowered. Particularly when it implies the search for Han Solo.... Sorry Jack Sparrow may mean Depp is missing for some of the movie. Bottom line. Should have based the story on Jack chopped off the fat in the plot/story that was put in place in an attempt to have the other characters involved again.
