PS2 Gaming |

|
Updated: 03/11/2006 Although the PS2 is technically inferior to the xbox (or p.c.) the amount of software available for it proves its success. There are a lot of top quality games for this machine. As a result I am a fan.
This machine has been adopted by my five year
old(jordan), who loves games like sponge bob, Cars etc. During the holidays
she got stuck into playing for an hour a day. I made the mistake of leaving
the machine on for a couple of days. Since then disks are failing to load. I
clean the laser lens and still the same. After some internet research I
discovered this is a "known issue" with ps2. Long term marathon playing
actually kills the machines by causing the laser to miss align it self.
Bloody stupid and cheap disk mechanism in place (another nail in the coffin for Sony and ps3 in my book). Found a good guide to fixing the issue here. Will try it later and see if it works. Laser was dead and I had to buy another PS2 for the kids. Not impressed a machine could day of extensive playing.
Speaking of PS3: delayed in Europe till 2007. Still
overpriced by "apparently" sporting twice the processing power of Xbox 360.
But considering you could buy a 360 in Europe in 2005, it would want to be
wouldn't it.
I will be sticking simple no B.S. reviews here, of the
games that interest me on the Ps2/pc platforms.
Ps2 highlights that may interest.
Ratings 1: avoid -----> 5: Excellent.
Socom 1:
Rating: 5
Socom 2:
Rating: 4
Socom 3:
Rating: 4
I decided to
go back and "try" and finish Socom 1.Doing so I go interested in playing the
sequels. Still very fine games, that were Sony's only real online game
(which doesn't bode well with their attempt to emulate Xbox live on the
PS3).
These games
still look good and play even better. If you haven't tried I would avoid a
trip back in time. Pick the first two up on platinum or second hand for a
steal. I would recommend the headset (which can be played with other games
like ghost recon). You feel like a brat at first, but it actually works. In
all solid games that have stood the test of time.
Scarface
Rating: 3.5
The developers of Scarface are obvious fans of the movie. It starts in the perfect section of the Movie, as Tony Montana is being attacked by an army in his mansion (at the end of the movie) and is armed to the teeth. You will find yourself smile as you see they have captured will walk and movement perfectly. The voice acting is also spot on. You will find yourself hard pushed to tell the difference between this and Pacino. Where does it fall. It tries to be a sandbox "grand theft auto clone" and does it well. The engine is impressive (much more so than 24). Car and gun handling works well. Graphics and sound are good. It just falls somewhere between game and realism. Tony can be shot to death before he dies, and that m16 never seems to be reloaded; I know it's a game. But makes it feel more cartoon than Scarface. But if you want a very adult game this is it. Violent as hell, mixed with very adult dialogue as Tony spills out Fucker, cock sucker as other very harsh insults as his rage increases. The more rage, the more invincible he becomes. Word of warning. Don't play this around your kids. Despite the over 18's violence. My five year old wanted to know why the "guy called him a cork sucker". Needless to say I turned off the PS2 immediately. Video game porn? I think so.... Open Season: Rating 3 As mentioned my kids have hijacked my PS2 (since I invested in a Xbox 360) and was pushed out of my own sitting room into the bedroom. The great thing about the ps2? The amount of excellent games for kids. The massive back catalogue and guarantee that every film coming out will see a license for the ps, makes it the perfect platform for kids. Consider you can buy one this xmas for 150 euro in Argos (with 2 game titles). There is no better time to get one (even if it is last gen). because they are just perfect for kids. Now for open season. The film is just out as has a strange storyline for kids, concerned with hunters and the animals they hunt. Haven't seen it. But the game is fun. Made up of the usual selection of mini and sub games, it is simply well laid out and easy for kids to pick up and keep them hooked. All without being too difficult, which is often the case with kids games. How do I gauge this, simple the amount of times you are called to help (the last scobby doo game nearly drove me insane). This coupled with how often they want to play it. My kids love it and yours will to. Great fun and well made (good cartoon visuals and sound) and rare moments that will frustrate all make for a good kids game.
