Updated: 12/10/2006 For the most part, Internet shopping is safe. But follow some simple basic steps: 1) Always use a credit card. You are offered protection from fraud. I the company goes into liquidation and doesn't send the item, don't pay. It always offers (limited) protection against fraud. Note: Stick to trusted credit card like VISA, avoid the lesser brands as if you read the fine print you will find they offer little or no protection. 2) Stick to known traders like Amazon, complete, play.com and alike. Avoid the smaller sites as they could close or their web pages may be hackers posing as companies (all to easy to do). 3) Avoid using e-bay like the plague. Look like a big safe company but it is absolutely plagued with fraud and leeching hackers and alike. On top of this, e-bay offer NO protection and very little payback (max $175). They will simply suspend the account of the seller. Big deal if you have been ripped off. If you use e-bay, use a credit card. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER pay from western union or alike and NEVER, NEVER. NEVER buy something after getting an email telling you that you can get it cheaper from them (outside and auction). Also you will immediately start to get emails asking for account information to be updated. These are hackers looking to steal you account and identity so they can rip off other e-bay members. Avoid. From my experience I used it once and will never use it again. Massive waste of time and money and I got absolutely plagued with frauding emails and alike after the fact. I got ripped off even though I was very careful and use secure payment (papal : secure my arse). The only saving grace I had was using VISA. Of which I still had to wait and pay interest for over 60 days after the transaction. E-bay was no help what so ever. A company that make a fortune from transactions but offers no protection for buyers and sellers. AVOID. 4) Ignore email offers and sales. Most are just spam or rip offs.
