Updated: 12/10/2006 Ratings 1: avoid -----> 5: Excellent. Superman Returns: Rating: 3. You can't help but have high expectations for a movie that cost $260 million (+) to shoot: an obscene amount of money to shoot a picture. Does it deliver? Well yes and no. Signer as always, is a very competent Director who clearly shows some love for the subject matter. The action sequences are very well handled and paced. Particularly the airplane scene: looks very CGI in places but impresses. The final action scenes are particularly the best. In which superman gets to be more superman than ever before. Singer really manages to bring the comic book hero to life. Performances on the whole are good. Kate Bosworth is ok. Spacey is the most disappointing on display here, phoning his performance in the first half of the movie: he just isn't Gene Hackman. He just seems to play it as Kevin Spacey (I think his head was still in the old Vic). Brandon Routh really shines. I think we'll see more of this actor (especially in that blue suit). In all fun, but runs too long. Great effects but parts of the story bore (especially young kids). But liked the way it continued from the older movies: original music score, Brando etc etc. Worth a look. Just don't expect too much.
