We are a group of undergraduate science students from Trinity College Dublin who plan to travel to South East Sulawesi in Indonesia next summer to assist as volunteers on conservation research projects organised by Operation Wallacea. Each member of the group will spend between four and six weeks working on a huge variety of conservation projects in both tropical jungle and coral reef habitats. In order to travel we must raise up to £3000 Sterling each to cover the trip and flights, and have come together as a group to coordinate our fundraising.
Operation Wallacea is a non-profit organisation which is committed to studying and protecting one of the most unique regions of Indonesia, which is home to many internationally significant species. The group organises and funds long term research projects from three centres in the region on the islands of Buton, Kabaena and Hoga, as well as conducting habitat surveys and working with the local communities to promote sustainable use of the natural resources.
Operation Wallacea has won international recognition for its work through a number of awards, and is to be the subject of a 'fly on the wall' documentary series to be filmed on location in Sulawesi next year.
