By end of April all students have sent their pictures of the painting competitions to us. We created a calendar for each child, teacher and members of the steering group. On July the 13th, we arranged a big community event with the steering group in the city theatre of Kaufbeuren. 450 students, parents and teachers came to the meeting. Even the mayor of the city took part in the event and made a speech. The winners of the painting competition got presents. A theatre group played a theatre programme with relationships to life skills.
88,5% of the students have had much fun with the core class with of "Fit Kids".
81,7% of the students learned in the programme "Fit Kids" how to say no if they are offered cigarettes.
In Germany students from the city of Kaufbeuren participate in the programme, which is called in Germany "Fit Kids" - fitte Kinder, fittes Kaufbeuren and which an own logo.
The title represents the aims of the project and shows the connection between the healthy development of the children to the conditions of the community Kaufbeuren and these children will influence the community in the future.
For evaluating the intervention a baseline survey was conducted among the students of the 5th forms in September 1999. The smoking patterns of all students are assessed through self - reported questionnaires. For comparative reasons, control groups in the city Straubing that did not take part in the intervention were questioned as well. 1,275 students answered the questionnaires in 24 participating school classes in Kaufbeuren (response rate = 99,1%) and in 27 control classes in Staubing (response rate = 97,5%).
In March and April 2000, we hold 4 training seminars for teachers in the afternoon.
The topics were:
a) Activity games in the class room 16 - 3 - 2000
b) Relaxing exercises in school class 23 - 3 - 2000
c) Drug addiction and Life Skills 5 - 4 - 2000
d) Bullying in schools 6 - 4 - 2000
These seminars aimed to inform and to motivate the teachers.
