In order to ensure sustainability of the project after its competition in June 2001, a peer education programme is now been developed. This project will be co-ordinated in partnership between the Health Promotion Department and the South Leitrim Neighbourhood Youth Project, a local Foroige initiative in Leitrim. It is envisaged that 30 young people will be trained as peer educators in an attempt to harness positive peer influence. This programme is planned to continue for the next four years when the Smoke Free Teens will be ready to leave post primary education. Aim of the Peer Education Programme To enable a group of 30 young people from the Smoke Free Leitrim Project to learn the skills and gain the knowledge necessary to conduct a smoking education programme among their peers. Objectives · That participants will have a knowledge of the dangers and effects of tobacco use. · That participants will develop their confidence, self esteem and assertiveness. · That participants will conduct peer research into the knowledge and attitudes towards smoking among their peer group. · That participants will analyise this research. · That participants will assist in the design and development of prevention and educational programmes relevant to the needs of young people. · That an interagency advisory committee will be established and involved in the development and facilitation of the peer education initiative. This group will include personnel from NWHB, NYP, Teachers, Parents, young people and personnel involved in similar projects. · That the programme be monitored and evaluated to assess the impact and participants and peer group.
Interested young people were asked to submit their names to the project officer / link teacher by December 6th 2000. It is planned that training will commence in Mid January 2001. |
