December 1st - South Ulster Development Squad

The second meeting of the south Ulster development squad was hosted by Shercock AC today. Despite the wintry conditions a large crowd was in attendance from counties Cavan, Fermanagh, Monaghan and Armagh. The session was organised by AAI Regional Development Officer Eamon Harvey and consisted of a technical session on track followed by circuit training indoors. the coaching team was made up of Francis Shaw Fermanagh, Sprints, Eamon Harvey, Middle Distance, David Doherty Donegal, High Jump and Shercock's John McGeever, long jump, Hugh Fitzpatrick, throws, and Paul Fitzpatrick, racewalk. The athletes and visiting coaches thoroughly enjoyed the occasion which brought them together in a positive training and social environment which will hopefully help them and their coaches prepare for the up-coming indoor and cross-country season.

September 30th - Irish Throwers Club Open Competition

Shercock AC in conjunction with the Irish Throwers Club held the National 'Irish Weights' Pentathlon and National Kugelschoken Championships today.

Kugelschoken consists of throwing a shot with discus technique from either a standing position or with unlimited running discus type turns.

The Irish Throwers Club was delighted to be given the opportunity to host an event in Shercock. The local Cavan club has put in a huge effort over the past year in constructing a fine throws arena consisting of a new design built hammer and Discus cage along with an all weather shot putt area. These efforts were widely acknowledged and praised today as people from all parts of the country came in support of the event. There was a strong representation from clubs from Cavan, Kerry, Dublin, Monaghan, Louth, Meath, Tipperary and Antrim.

The Weight Pentathlon consists of all five throws, Hammer, Shot Putt, Discus, Javelin and Weight for Distance. The competition is the first of a three leg affair with the second leg be held in Dunboyne on October 27 th alongside the World 56lb Championships, and the third to be decided but scheduled for the New Year.

The event provided a great spectacle of Irish throwing including former National Hammer champion Mark Hanly, Fr Murphy's Co. Meath and North Down's Jeremy Harper, reigning National u23 Discus and Shot Putt and WFD title holder. It was a great opportunity for young up and coming throwers to witness these finely tuned technicians in action.

In the Men's Pentathlon Jeremy took top spot with Mark close behind in second. Shercock's Albinas Kiltinavicius came in for third position. On an Individual note Albanas' brother Rimantas set a new Cavan Record in the Javelin with a fine throw of 41.62m

In the Women's event Michelle Pilkington (Dunboyne) took the honour of top spot with other winners including John O'Connor Naas AC (Masters Men 60), Patsy Conroy, (Brother Pearse) (Masters Men 65), Michael McGarry, (Dundrum South Dublin) (Masters Men 70), James Nagle, Farranfore (Men's u23), Lynsey Glover, Lagan Valley (Women's u20), Paul Woods, Mid Ulster (Men's u20), Maggi Donnelly Mid Ulster,  (Girls u17) and Conal Campion St Andrews (Boys u17).

The Kugelschoken event drew a close to a very eventful day with Jeremy Harper and Michelle Pilkington securing the Men and Women's titles respectively in the first ever National Championships in this discipline.

Sep 19th - Craig Lynch Wins Ulster Schools Combined Events

Craig Lynch underlined his ability as an all-round athlete at the Ulster Schools combined events championships in Bangor today when he won the senior boys title with a total of 3476 points while representing the Patrician High School, Carrickmacross. The competition, unusually, involves six events instead of the more common pentathlon and Craig's best performance came in the 110m hurdles, when, in his first ever attempt at the event, he recorded a very useful 17.2s. There were further positive results in the long jump (5.93m), shot putt (10.78m) and 200m (22.9s), however he struggled to find his best form in the high jump, in which he cleared only 1.55m. Craig finished with a relatively laid back effort over 800m, by which time the overall result was beyond question. The all-Ireland schools combined events takes place in Dublin on September 29th and Craig will undoubtedly be in the hunt for the medals once again as he represents his school and his province.

News Updates:

Well done to Fiona Murray (left) who has been awarded a sports scholarship at the University of Wales where she is studying towards a degree in physical education. We wish Fiona every success in her studies in Wales and the forthcoming cross country season.

Hugh Fitzpatrick was one of a large number of athletes who turned out in Santry recently to honour the memory of Irish throws coach John Davis, who passed away earlier this year. The highlight of the evening was the unveiling of a commemorative plaque in John's memory. Hugh, who was coached by John, also took part in the shot put event in the programme and won it.

August 11th - ESB National League Final

Positive End to Season For Shercock's Men's Team in Premier Final

The curtain came down on the 2007 track season in Tullamore today where the country's top club's battled it out for the National League title at the rain-soaked midlands venue. Indeed the weather threatened at times to make all the news as events were curtailed due to flooded runways and pits while the hapless organisers of the Tullamore Show were forced to cancel Sunday's event at the nearby showgrounds due to flooding. For the Shercock men's team, however the experience was entirely positive as they competed on a level par with the country's best clubs in their first appearance in the premier division final and finished a creditable 4th place on the day, dropping back to fifth when the bonus points from the qualifying rounds were added. North Down were the deserved winners of the men's title, followed by Dublin clubs Clonliffe and Raheny, then Leevale-UCC, Shercock, Menapians, Crusaders and hosts Tullamore Harriers.

Paul Fitzpatrick and Brian Flatley led the way for Shercock with wins in the walk and high jump, there were second place finishes by Brian in the sprint hurdles and team captain Hugh Fitzpatrick in the weight for distance. Hugh also finished 4th in the hammer. Craig Lynch rose to the challenge of a sprint double in the absence of team mate Gerard O'Reilly and scored valuable points with a third place finish in the 100m and fourth in the 200m. Paul Smith also performed well with another third place finish in the long jump, however the prospect of landing in a partially flooded sand pit was less appealing and he could only manage fifth in the triple jump. Philip Daly was fifth in the 400m hurdles and teamed up with Craig Lynch, Kevin McCloy and Paul Smith to finish a useful fourth in the 4x100m relay. Kevin finished fourth in the 800m, despite the effects of a recent illness, and Matthew O'Reilly was likewise fourth in the shot putt. Brothers Conor and John McCarey finished in fifth place in the 5000m and steeplechase respectively while Luke O'Brien was seventh in the 1500m and Sean Carolan stepped into the 400m slot, finishing eighth. There was cause for celebration in the javelin when Albinas Kiltinavicius broke the club record with a best throw of 37.54m to finish in fifth place, following just three rounds as the javelin runway disappeared under a tide of rainwater, forcing the organisers to cut short the competition.

Captain Hugh Fitzpatrick was delighted with the team's performance: "This has been a great day for Shercock. We stood shoulder to shoulder with the best clubs in the country and held our own. This is a young team, a team for the future and they have gained a lot from today's experience. Now that we know what we are capable of, we will plan for the future with confidence and hopefully achieve an even better result next time around."

The deluge at the league final in Tullamore finally swamped the sand pit being used for the triple jump, prompting a flood relief effort by an army of officials which eventually succeeded in clearing enough water to allow the competition to continue.

August 4th - International Victories for Paul Fitzpatrick and Craig Lynch

Two of the club's most talented emerging athletes shared their first ever wins at international level this weekend. Competing in the Racewalking Nations Cup in Denmark, Paul Fitzpatrick held of the challenge of leading walkers from Switzerland and Denmark to win the junior men's 5km event. Racing on a difficult, hilly course, Paul covered the distance in a time of 22 minutes 44 seconds, having broken away from the field with a strong opening 3km in a time of 13:11. The Irish junior champion was delighted with the result, which combined with solid performances by the men's 20km team of David Kidd and John Egan, secured victory for Ireland in the tournament. Paul was back on track again on Sunday (left) when he contested the Danish Open 5km championships. In a highly competitive race, Paul led the field until the closing stages, when he was overtaken by Irish team mate David Kidd, however he held off the challenge of the leading Danish competitor to finish an impressive second in a time of 22:07.

Craig Lynch (right) faced tough opposition in the under 18 200m at the Celtic International in Antrim, going into the event ranked third of the four celtic athletes, with the favourite from Wales ranked almost a second better with a pb of 21.7s to Craig's 22.6. Craig has shown continued improvement at 200m this season, however, and went into the event as Irish champion having won the under 18 title in Tullamore a week previously. Running a storming bend, Craig entered the home straight in the lead into the teeth of a strong, 4 meter per second headwind. Holding his form well, he resisted the challenge of the Welshman, taking the gold by a margin of a meter on the line. Craig had further cause for celebration later in the day when he ran the second leg of the 4x100m for Ulster, helping the team to victory over the other celtic nations with another positive performance. photo: Paul O'Neill

July 31st - Celtic Cup, Scotland

Kevin McCloy represented Ireland at the Celtic Cup match in Scotland today, competing in the 1000m event. Kevin, who was still feeling the effects of a recent illness, started positively, however as the pace quickened in the closing stages he struggled to keep in contact with the leaders and dropped down the field. Finishing in third place in the Celtic nations competition, Kevin shared in the success of the Irish team who finished a close second to hosts Scotland in the overall competition. Kevin was joined on the trip by Shercock coach John McGeever who traveled as coach to the Irish team.

July 29th - AAI National League, Cork

The Shercock men's team made the long journey to Cork at the weekend to compete in round 2 of the national league. There were individual wins for Paul Fitzpatrick in the 3km walk, Brian Flatley (right) in the 110m hurdles and John McCarey in the 3000m steeplechase. On a good day for the throwers, Hugh Fitzpatrick was second in both the hammer and weight for distance and Matthew O'Reilly was third in the shot put and discus. Third places were achieved by Philip Daly in the 400m hurdles, Paul Smith in the long jump and the 4x100m relay team. Brian Flatley also finished second in the high jump. There were further positive performances by Gerard O'Reilly, Craig Lynch, Kevin Ruxton, Luke O'Brien and Conor McCarey. When the points were added up, Shercock were lying in fourth place in the Cork group with 96 points, which combined with the club's score in round 1 of 98 points, left the team with 194 points overall. This was enough to qualify for the final in seventh place - a great achievement in the club's first year in the Premier division. The team can now look forward to a positive close to the season at the league final in Tullamore on August 11th.

Craig Lynch pulls clear of the field to win the under 18 200m at the AAI juvenile championships in Tullamore.

Paul Fitzpatrick set an impressive personal best of 21:58 for the 5km walk to take the gold at the AAI juvenile championships, however it was not fast enough to break the championship record set in 2005 by Shercock club mate Peter Muldoon.

July 27th - Track Development

The final stage of the summer works at the track in Shercock is now well advanced with Irish Sports Surfaces on site laying the tartan sprint training lanes, which are located alongside the long jump runway (right). The project also includes a new tartan pole vault runway. The other major elements of the summer programme - a new shot put area and hammer cage - were successfully completed in June.

July 21st & 22nd - AAI Senior Championships

The national senior championships lived up to its billing as the principal competition on the athletics calendar once again as all of the country's major stars turned out to provide a feast of sporting entertainment in front of an appreciative crowd. Major highlights included world class performances by Paul Hession and Eileen O'Keefe as they set new national records at 200m and hammer respectively. They were almost matched in the record stakes by Shercock's Hugh Fitzpatrick, left, who won the under 23 weight for height competition with a personal best of 5m before just falling short in an attempt at the Irish record of 5.50m. Also showing impressive form from Shercock was Kevin McCloy who smashed his pb when finishing a close fifth in the 800m final in 1:51.32. Kevin had further cause for celebration following the championships when he was selected for the Irish team for the Celtic Cup in Scotland on July 31st in the 1000m event. Another rising star from the club, Brian Flatley, was less than pleased with two fourth place finishes in the high jump and 110m hurdles. It is a measure of Brian's improvement this season that a national senior medal is the least of his expectations as he progresses from his decathlon background towards success in his preferred individual events. Paul Fitzpatrick produced a conservative effort to finish sixth in the 10km walk in 46:17, his best time for the distance since the European Cup in May. There was no joy for the Shercock sprinters, however as both Philip Daly and Gerry O'Reilly failed to progress from their heats in the 100m and 200m.

Other news: Congratulations to Craig Lynch and Kevin Ruxton who were selected for the Ulster team for the Celtic Games at 100m and 400m hurdles respectively. The club's summer works programme is now back on track, literally, as contractors Irish Sports Surfaces have arrived on site to begin work on the synthetic finish for the sprint training lanes and pole vault runway.

July 15th - Scottish Decathlon Championships

Decathlon Silver for Brian Flatley

An impressive series of performances in the jumps events lifted Brian Flatley to the silver medal position at the Scottish Decathlon Championships in Grangemouth today. Brian's highlight came in the pole vault where he smashed his PB and set a new club record with a 3.70m clearance. The 100m provided another opportunity for a PB which he achieved in a time of 11.72s. Another fine display in his favourite discipline saw him produce a best clearance of 1.97m to lead the high jump. When the points were totaled Brian had accumulated 5230, another PB, leaving him in second place behind fellow Irishman Brendan Bourke.

July 14th/15th - AAI Age Group Championships, Tullamore

Tullamore Clouds Have A Silver Lining for Shercock Juveniles

The clouds that dominated the skyline at the Tullamore Harriers stadium this weekend produced a silver lining for a number of Shercock athletes as they achieved podium finishes in their various disciplines. Fiona Smith made a return to the pole vault and was rewarded with a silver medal following a 2.20m clearance in the under 19 competition. The event was won by Claire Wilkinson (B&A) with a new championship record of 3.15m. Fiona is pictured left congratulating Claire on her achievement. Paul Smith appeared to have done enough to win the under 17 long jump with an early effort of 6.36m, however his party was spoiled by a late response in the fifth round from defending champion Timothy Harrington (below) who broke the sand at 6.39m to claim the title. Niall Clerkin was also in impressive form in the under 13 long jump, adding almost half a metre to his PB to also take the silver medal with a jump of 4.79m. Craig Lynch produced his best time to date in the final of the under 18 100m, sprinting through the rain in 11.18 seconds to take second place behind Ferrybank's Christopher Russell. Gerard O'Reilly continued his steady return to fitness with a bronze medal winning effort of 51.80s in the under 19 400m, having earlier finished fourth in the final of the 100m in 11.20s. Also competing in Tullamore was Celine Clerkin, who set a PB of 2:30.4 when finishing 10th in the final of the under 15 800m, Ciaran O'Reilly who also finished 10th in the under 13 shot putt with 8.94m and Darina Fitzpatrick who finished 12th in the under 13 javelin with 13.87m.

July 8th - Irish Junior & Under 23 Championships

Gold for McCloy, Muldoon & Fitzpatrick

There was plenty of drama at the Irish junior and under 23 championships in Tullamore today with the weather making its own contribution in the form of torrential downpours, thunder and lightning. However it was the drama on the track that deservedly drew most attention and there was plenty of interest from a Shercock perspective as a number of club members ascended the medal rostrum. Kevin McCloy (left) produced one of the major upsets of the day in the under 23 800m. After a conservative opening lap the field was well bunched until they reached the back straight when Conor Healy (Clonliffe Harriers) opening up a gap which Kevin and Joe Warne moved quickly to cover. As the trio entered the home straight the chasing pair drew level with Healy and all three battled their way down the finish straight in close order. It was the Shercock man who proved strongest, however and Kevin pulled ahead to clinch victory and a cherished Irish title.

There was further cause for celebration in the racewalk championships where Peter Muldoon (right) and Paul Fitzpatrick claimed a historic double win for the club in the under 23 and junior competitions. Paul continued to show the strong form he has displayed all season with a positive effort, covering the 5km distance in 22:20 to take the junior title ahead of Niall Prendeville. Peter likewise showed an improvement in fitness when winning the under 23 title in 23:34 from the Togher AC pairing of Mark Dineen and Timothy Healy.

Hugh Fitzpatrick (left) collected no fewer than three bronze medals in the throwing events, starting with the hammer in which he threw a season's best of 41.79m. Hugh then took on the shot put to finish third once again with a best effort of 11.37m and finally repeated the result in the 35 pound weight for distance (left), throwing a personal best of 8.42m. Paul Smith's best effort of 6.32m left him in fourth place in the junior men's long jump which was won by Eoin Hannon (Tullamore Harriers) with an outstanding series of jumps which included double efforts of 7.43m. Gerard O'Reilly and Craig Lynch both progressed comfortably to the final of the junior men's 200m in which Gerry finished 4th and Craig 6th.

July 1st - ESB National Track & Field League

Shercock Make Positive Start in Premier Division Debut

Making their first appearance in the Premier Division of the National League, Shercock's senior men's team finished in joint second place behind defending champions North Down AC after a very positive day's competition at the first round in Navan. There were three event winners on the day, each of them outstanding in their own right. Paul Fitzpatrick put the Ulster 3km racewalk record under threat when he smashed his personal best to clock 12:43 for the distance. Gerard O'Reilly showed a return to form with a battling win in the 200m in a time of 21.8s while the 4x100m relay team of Philip Daly, Craig Lynch, Gerard O'Reilly and Paul Smith were untouchable as they won by a street. Paul Smith jumped 6.57m to finish second in the long jump and also claimed a PB of 12.54m when finishing fourth in the triple jump. Craig Lynch fought all the way to the line to secure second place in the 100m in 11.1s and Kevin Ruxton also finished well in second place in the 400m hurdles, which was won by a non-scoring guest. Brian Flatley was third in the 110m hurdles (15.3s) and the high jump (1.85m). Philip Daly took third place in the pole vault and recorded a PB of 51.6s in the 400m. Hugh Fitzpatrick likewise picked up a brace of third places in the hammer (39.45m) and the 56 pound weight for distance. Albinas Kiltinavicius made his first appearance for Shercock in the throws and did well to take fourth place in the javelin and 6th in the discus. John McCarey added to the points total with a solid performance in his first outing in the steeplechase, finishing in fourth place in 10:55. Conor McCarey also broke new ground when he finished in fifth place in the 5000m in a pb of 16:44. Guest Fionan O'Reilly, from Annalee AC, finished in seventh place in the 1500m.

Paul Smith, Shauna McGeever and Kevin Ruxton represented Ulster at the Tailteann Games Schools Inter-Provincial in Tullamore today. Paul jumped 6.35m to finish fourth in the long jump, Kevin made a return to the track after a lay-off due to injury and also finished fourth in the 400m hurdles. Shauna competed in the pole vault where her best clearance of 1.80m left her in fifth place. All three attend St. Aidan's Comprehensive School, Cootehill. On a very positive day for Ulster athletics, both the boys and girls teams won their matches.

June 17th - Ulster Senior T&F, Garda Open Sports & Dublin Racewalking Grand Prix

A very busy weekend for Shercock athletes and officials began with the Ulster Senior Track & Field Championships in Antrim on Saturday where Hugh Fitzpatrick reached the medal podium with a second place finish in the shot putt. Kevin McCloy also underlined his impressive early season form when he finished in fourth place overall and second of the Irish in the 800m, recoding a useful 1:52.9 for the distance. On Sunday Paul Fitzpatrick and Peter Muldoon (left) were in action at the Dublin Grand Prix of Racewalking in the Phoenix Park. Paul struggled to reproduce the form he showed at the European Cup in May but nonetheless produced a solid effort to win the junior men's 10km in a time of 48:49. Peter was competing in the Irish 20km championships, his first attempt at the distance in competition, and walked conservatively, covering the distance in a time of 1:50:11 to finish a respectable fourth in the event.

Brian Flatley represented the University of Limerick against a Harvard-Yale selection on Saturday and produced two personal bests in what turned out to be an unfortunate series of events for the talented multi-eventer. Having secured new best marks when finishing third in the 110m hurdles (15.81s) and long jump (6.66m), Brian took to the air for the high jump and after positive clearances at 1.85m and 1.90m, came off a bad landing at 1.95m and suffered a catastrophic injury to his nose, which he broke with his knee. We all wish Brian a speedy recovery.

Garda Open Sports 2007

The Garda Open Sports made a welcome return to Shercock after a two year lapse and confirmed its status as one of the top events in the region as a large crowd from across the North-East turned out for a highly enjoyable day's sporting action in ideal weather conditions. There was strong competition in all the juvenile age groups for the impressive collection of cups and trophies on offer and the event went off without a hitch under the direction of local Garda Tom Coyle. Highlights on the day included a return to the Garda Sports by Irish international distance runner Roseanne Galligan (right) . A native of Kilnacrott, Roseanne returned recently from the US where she is at college on an athletics scholarship, and she is currently in preparation for the European Cup at which she will represent Ireland next weekend. Roseanne completed a hat-trick of wins in the women's 100m, 400m and 1500m. Another highlight of the day came in the high jump where local athlete Craig Lynch cleared an impressive 1.80m to win the event with the help a bit of coaching assistance from David Shields. The overall success of the day should secure the future of the popular sports day which will come as welcome news for the many visitors who left smiling and with assurances that "We'll be back"!

June 9th - Ulster Age Group Championships

The Ulster & NI Age Group Championships took place at a sun-drenched Antrim Forum at the weekend. A small group of athletes from the club made the journey to compete and achieved a number of podium positions. Paul Smith continued his strong run of form with a gold in the long jump, silver at 200m and bronze at 100m in the under 17 age group (left). Shauna McGeever further improved her personal best in the pole vault when she cleared 2.00m for the first time to win the under 15 competition (right). Celine Clerkin showed a good return to form when she finished second in the 800m in the same age group. Barry Cooney was unlucky to miss out on a qualifying position for the all-Irelands by just one place when he came fifth in his first outing over 1500m in the under 14 age group.

Other News: Kevin McCloy set a new best mark of 1:52.87 when finishing third in the 800m D race at the British Milers Club Meet in Manchester on Saturday. Kevin has seen his time for the event drop steadily through the opening part of the season and has his sights set on the qualifying mark for the European under 23 championships of 1:49. Brian Flatley also further extended his personal best for 400m at the Dublin Graded Meet on June 6th, crossing the line in 54.64s.

June 2nd - Irish Schools Track & Field Championships

The adverse weather that dogged the bank holiday weekend failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the hundreds of young athletes who turned out in Tullamore for the Irish Schools Track & Field Championships. There were some outstanding competitions across all the age groups in both track and field events and a number of local athletes featured in the shake-up for the medals. Paul Smith (left)  (St. Aidan's Cootehill) produced his best outdoor performance to date when he broke the sand at 6.46m in the intermediate long jump, however this was just enough to secure the bronze medal behind fellow Ulster man Nathan Reid who won with a highly impressive best effort of 6.95m. Craig Lynch (Patrician High School) continued to show improvement at 200m, finishing just outside the medals in fourth place in a highly competitive senior final. Craig had the consolation of setting a new PB of 22.80s. Shauna McGeever (St. Aidan's, Cootehill) made her first appearance at the schools finals and gave a good account of herself in the junior girls pole vault, achieving a new personal best of 1.90m when also finishing fourth. Matthew O'Reilly (Bailieborough CS) was in action in both the senior shot putt and discus, finishing 5th in the shot with 11.89m and sixth in the discus with 36.67m.

June 3rd - Ulster Juvenile Championships

A number of the club's youngest athletes made the short journey to Monaghan and a rain-soaked Beech Hill track for the Ulster under 13 championships and children's games. They had a very successful outing with no fewer than three individuals winning provincial titles in the under 13 age group. Niall Clerkin was a gold medalist once again in the long jump and also picked up a bronze in the sprint, Ciaran O'Reilly was an impressive winner of the shot putt and Edel Kiernan repeated her indoor success with a win at 600m. Also featuring on the medal podium was Darina Fitzpatrick, who won the bronze medal in the javelin. In the under 12 team competition Ciaran Corrigan and Padraig Donagh finished in third place in the long jump.

May 27th - Brian Flatley Sets New Mark In Decathlon

Brian Flatley achieved a new personal best of 5169 points when he finished in third place at the AAI Decathlon Championships in Greystones. Despite feeling tired after the demanding two day schedule on Saturday and Sunday, Brian was delighted with his performance which included new best marks for 100m (11.87s), 400m (55.06s), 1500m (5:03), 110m hurdles (16.06s) and discus. The overall title was won by Philip Kearney with Brendan Bourke second. Brian is hoping to complete at least one more major decathlon during the summer with the aim of building on the progress shown in the Irish championships.

Paul Fitzpatrick followed up his success at the European Racewalking Cup last weekend with a third place finish against senior opposition in the 5km race at the AAI Games in Sligo. In the same race, Peter Muldoon completed his first competition since returning from college in the US, finishing in sixth place following a conservative effort in the blustery conditions.

Kevin McCloy was another athlete competing back on home soil after returning from university in Scotland and did well to take third place in the men's 400m in Sligo. Times on the day were affected by a strong headwind on the back straight and Kevin crossed the line in 51.05s.

May 26th - Cavan Track & Field Championships

The county track & field championships were held at Claremont Stadium in Navan at the weekend. After a very long day's competition, Shercock retained the McCormack Cup for the senior championships, holding off a strong challenge from Innyvale AC, while the club's juveniles produced a series of outstanding individual performances which left the them in second place overall in the Moynagh Cup competition. A successful return to competition by Fiona Murray after a winter dogged by injury was one of the highlights from a Shercock perspective, while a number of athletes also set new marks in unfamiliar events - see results.

Paul Fitzpatrick Competes in European Cup

Paul Fitzpatrick competed in his first major international competition at the weekend when he represented Ireland in the junior men's 10km at the European Racewalking Cup in Leamington, England. Competing against the best juniors in Europe, Paul smashed his personal best by over 3 minutes to finish in 28th place in a time of 45 minutes 40 seconds after a very positive effort over the final 2km which saw him gain two places in the international field. Among those finishing behind him were the leading racewalkers of Sweden, Estonia, Switzerland and Denmark.

On a highly positive day for Irish racewalking, Robert Heffernan (below left) set a new national record on 1:20:10 when finishing fifth in the men's 20km and Jamie Costin (below right) completed his return to the elite level of the sport following his near career-ending car crash at the Athens Olympics when his achieved the qualifying mark for Beijing 2008 in the 50km race.

May 19th - Ulster Schools Track and Field Championships

The cold winds that swept across the Antrim Forum failed to deter the best of Ulster's athletes as they battled the conditions and each other at a highly competitive Ulster Schools Championships at the weekend. Shercock athletes featured prominently on the medal podium with the first gold of the weekend being won on Friday when Shauna McGeever (St. Aiden's Cootehill) cleared a height of 1.80m to win the junior girls pole vault in her first competition at the event. Shauna is pictured right with Irish Olympian Maeve Kyle following her medal presentation. Kevin Ruxton (St. Aiden's) came from behind to take the lead at the final hurdle of the intermediate 400m hurdles and ran on strongly to secure the gold. Craig Lynch (Patrician High School) overcame the disappointment of a third place finish in a highly competitive senior 100m final when he returned to the track to produce a commanding performance against the same opposition in the 200m final, where he stormed off the bend and powered down the home straight to win by a large margin (below). Paul Smith (St. Aiden's) struggled with the wind in the long jump, however his best effort of 5.97m was still enough to win the intermediate event, which was largely spoiled by the conditions. Matthew O'Reilly (Bailieborough CS) recovered sufficiently from a recent knee injury to reach the podium twice in the throwing events. Matthew produced a best effort of 12.74m to take second place in the shot putt and also threw the discus 35.7m to finish third. Luke O'Brien (St. Aiden's) was unable to reproduce his 2006 medal winning form in the senior steeplechase, finishing just outside the medals in fourth place. Also representing Bailieborough CS was Fiona Smith who finished in ninth place in the senior long jump. Photos by Paul O'Neill, Brian O'Reilly & John McGeever

April 28th: New Throwing Facility at Shercock: The first stage of the club's 2007 development plan was completed at the weekend when a new shot putt circle and all-weather throwing sector were installed by contractor Michael McEntee. Groundworks were also completed for the other two phases of the plan - construction of a hammer throwing cage and tartan sprint lanes. The new facility was put to good use on Saturday when the final round of the Cavan Spring League was held in Shercock and proved highly popular with both competitors and officials.

The new facility starts to take shape.
