ACT ONE (GB)
gr.1999
In The Wings - Summer Sonnet, by Baillamont
Shadwell Stud, Norfolk
Group 1 winner at two and three, Act One's only defeat in six starts came when
runner-up to Sulamani in the Prix du Jockey-Club (Gr1) at Chantilly in June.
Due to tackle High Chaparral in the Budweiser Irish Derby (Gr1), he sustained
a career-ending injury - hairline fracture of a hind cannon bone - just days
before the race. Nunnery Stud lost the brothers Nashwan and Unfuwain in 2002
but Act One will be aiming to fill the void. By the sire of Group sire Winged
Love and from the family of Hector Protector, Act One is a fascinating prospect.
ALEXIUS (GB)
b.1998
Rainbow Quest - Alexandrie, by Val De L'Orne
Thomastown Stud, Co Meath
Group winning full-brother to two Pattern winners and a half-brother to Group
winning filly Animatrice (by Alleged) and to Classic placed, Gr1 winner Poliglote
(by Sadler's Wells), Alexius comes from the family of Derby hero Quest For Fame
(by Rainbow Quest), the sire of a string of Gr1 winners in Australia as well
as one in America and several European Pattern winners. Also, French-based Poliglote
has sired two Stakes winners in his first crop, now aged four.
AUCTION HOUSE (USA)
b.1996
Exbourne - Fast Flow, by Riverman
Llety Stud, Camarthen
One of the best two-year-olds of his year when he won the Champagne Stakes (Gr2)
and runner-up in the Dewhurst (Gr1), Auction House later won three times in
America though never quite fulfilled that early potential. A son of brilliant
but tragically ill-fated performer Exbourne, he begins his new career in Wales.
BACH (IRE)
b.1997
Caerleon - Producer, by Nashua
Castle Hyde Stud, Fermoy
Near top class colt with plenty of black-type wins and Group 1 placings to his
name, Bach seemingly does not have enough appeal to attract Flat breeders and
so has been sent straight to the National Hunt division. The Nijinsky stallion
line has fairly done well in that sphere so perhaps he will make a name for
himself in his new career.
BAD AS I WANNA BE (IRE)
ch.1998
Common Grounds - Song Of The Glens, by Horage
Morristown Lattin Stud, Co Kildare
A runaway victory in the Prix Morny (Gr1) as a two-year-old proved easily the
highlight of the short career of Bad As I Wanna Be but being such a talented
two-year-old performer and by Morristown Lattin's former successful sire Common
Grounds (by Kris), he should prove popular. Potentially a useful commercial
sire.
BEAT HOLLOW (GB)
b.1997
Sadler's Wells - Wemyss Bight, by Dancing Brave
Juddmonte Farm, Newmarket
A lovely individual that reminds us of his own sire, Beat Hollow was not entirely
what one would have expected for a son of Sadler's Wells and 12 furlong Classic
winner Wemyss Bight. By this we mean that he was an excellent mile to ten furlong
colt and just about got 12 furlongs. Four times a Group 1 winner, and third
in the Derby, he is sure to receive plenty of support. A bright prospect who
could become one of the better sire sons to represent Sadler's Wells.
BEST OF THE BESTS (IRE)
ch.1997
Machiavellian - Sueboog, by Darshaan
Dalham Hall Stud, Newmarket
Good-looking Group 1 winner who never quite reached the heights that he promised
to do, Best Of The Bests was a near top class performer from a mile to ten furlongs
and having been pitched at a very sensible introductory fee, he should certainly
receive plenty of support. He has the pedigree to enable him to sire some notable
runners.
BOREAL (GER)
ch.1998
Java Gold - Britannia
Gestut Ammerland, Germany
Winner of the Deutsches Derby (Gr1) in 2001 and Coronation Cup (Gr1) in 2002,
Boreal was only the second German horse to win a Group 1 in England (Star Appeal
in the 1975 Eclipse Stakes was the first). Being a top class performer out of
a top German mare, he should receive the best of support and he is a fascinating
stallion prospect.
CHURLISH CHARM (GB)
b.1997
Niniski - Blushing Storm, by Blushing Groom
Windmill View Stud, Co Galway
Yorkshire Cup (Gr2) winner was not the force of old last season but gets a deserved
chance at stud. Being by the sire of notable Classic siring stallions Hernando
and Lomitas as well as rising National Hunt sire star Alflora, he could certainly
get some high class jumpers.
DILSHAAN (GB)
b.1998
Darshaan - Avila, by Ajdal
Tara Stud, Co Meath
Winner of the Racing Post Trophy (Gr1) at two and Dante Stakes (Gr2) at three,
Dilshaan's career was cut short by injury. A highly talented performer on his
day, he retires to stud in Ireland and with his own sire now dead, should prove
fairly popular. The Darshaan-Ajdal cross has also given us star miler Mark Of
Esteem, sire of Guineas heroine Ameerat from his first crop. Dilshaan is the
subject of a bonus deal in which a substantial bonus will be paid for his first
Gr1 or Gr2 winner.
ENDLESS SUMMER (GB)
b.1998
Zafonic - Well Away, by Sadler's Wells
Bearstone Stud
One of the best two-year-olds of his year, Endless Summer won the Richmond Stakes
(Gr2) and was runner-up in both the Middle Park (Gr1) and Prix Morny (Gr1).
His dam is a full-sister to Group 1 winner and leading Australian sire Scenic,
responsible for a host of Group 1 winners. Also, this is the family responsible
for champions and leading sires Rainbow Quest and Warning. With the right chances
he could get some high class runners.
FATH (USA)
b.1997
Danzig - Desirable, by Lord Gayle
Rathasker Stud, Co Kildare
Regally-bred horse that was Group 1 placed as a two-year-old and a seven furlong
Pattern winner at four, Fath joins the highly successful commercial stallion
Mujadil at Rathasker. Sure to receive plenty of support, he is a bright prospect.
GOLAN (IRE)
b.1998
Spectrum - Highland Gift, by Generous
Coolmore Stud, Co Tipperary
Winner of the Guineas and Prix Niel (Gr2) and runner-up in the Derby as a three-year-old,
Golan was also lightly raced at four but added the King George to his record.
A top class colt on his day, he is sure to be well supported in his new role
and it will be fascinating to see how he does as a sire.
INVINCIBLE SPIRIT (IRE)
b.1997
Green Desert - Rafha, by Kris
Irish National Stud, Co Kildare
A solid Group 3 performer that was a talented sprinter since the age of two,
Invincible Spirit produced a career-best effort when winning the Sprint Cup
(Gr1) at Haydock in September. By the sire of Desert Prince and out of a Classic
winning mare, he is an interesting addition to the stallion ranks. There is
a lot of stamina on his distaff side and he may become more a sire of milers
than sprinters.
IRON MASK (USA)
b.1998
Danzig - Raise A Beauty, by Alydar
Ballyhane Stud, Co Offaly
Group winning sprinter as a two-year-old, this close relative of Dayjur won
a Group 1 sprint in Singapore as a four-year-old. By a leading sire of sires,
he is sure to be well-supported and could certainly get some high class offspring.
ISHIGURU (USA)
b.1998
Danzig - Strategic Maneuver, by Cryptoclearance
Tweenhills Stud, Gloucestershire
Ishiguru looked an outstanding sprint prospect when bolting home in a maiden
at two. Though he did become a Group winning sprinter, his career did not work
out as hoped. Kept in training as a four-year-old, he did not make it back to
the track due to an injury. A $1.15 million yearling and out of a Grade 1 winning
filly that was best as a juvenile, Ishiguru could become a useful sire of sprinters.
By one of the world's leading stallions and sire of sires, he is said to be
limited to 100 mares.
JAMMAAL (GB)
b.1997
Robellino - Navajo Love Song, by Dancing Brave
Hamford Stud, Wexford
It's hard to believe but this high class colt never won a Pattern race. A multiple
Gr2 placed, multiple Stakes winner, he was tough and consistent and arguably
better than his year-older half-brother Mus-If (by Lahib) who won the Gr1 National
Stakes as a two-year-old. Jammaal thoughly deserves this opportunity and it
is hoped that receives the support he has earned.
KELTOS (FR)
gr.1998
Kendor - Loxandra, by Last Tycoon
Airlie Stud, Co Dublin
High class three-year-old miler that improved to such an extent over the winter
that he became arguably the best miler in Europe in 2002 - he was robbed in
the International Classifications. So impressive was his victory in the Juddmonte
Lockinge Stakes (Gr1) at Newbury in the Spring, he looked a potential superstar
in the making. Sadly he was not seen out again and an injury saw his retirement
at the start of September. He joins former mile star Docksider and successful
2002 freshman Desert Story at Airlie Stud. From a leading French stallion line
and by the sire of useful young French stallion Nombre Premier, he will make
an interesting prospect. A half-brother to two Stakes winners, he comes from
a top class female line.
KYLLACHY (GB)
b.1998
Pivotal - Pretty Poppy, by Song
Cheveley Park Stud
One of the best sprinters of the year and brilliant winner of the Temple Stakes
(Gr2) in May, a half-share in Kyllachy was purchased by Cheveley Park Stud just
days before he took third in the King's Stand Stakes (Gr2) at Royal Ascot. He
then took the Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr1) in style. Being introduced at a sensible
fee and being by a hot young sire, Kyllachy is likely to prove very popular
with breeders.
MR COMBUSTIBLE (IRE)
b.1998
Hernando - Warg, by Dancing Brave
Beechbrook Stud, Co Wicklow
Winner of the Geoffrey Freer Stakes (Gr2) and Chester Vase (Gr3) and third in
the St Leger (Gr1), this half-brother to Group winning filly Miletrian (by Marju)
is an interesting prospect. He retires to a primarily National Hunt base but
hopefully this son of leading young sire Hernando (by Niniski) will get a few
flat-bred mares too.
NOVERRE (USA)
b.1998
Rahy - Danseur Fabuleux, by Northern Dancer
Kildangan Stud, Co Kildare
Leading performer as a two-year-old and a top class miler at three, Noverre
disappointed as a four-year-old but given that he represents the Blushing Groom
stallion line and is a three-parts brother to Arazi (sire of Gr1 winner Congaree)
from the family of Ajdal (sire of Gr1 winner Cezanne) and Formidable (sire of
Gr1 winner and Gr1 sire Efisio), he should prove very popular. An exciting prospect.
ROCK OF GIBRALTAR (IRE)
b.1999
Danehill - Offshore Boom, by Be My Guest
Coolmore Stud, Tipperary
Winner of seven consecutive Group 1s at seven and eight furlongs over two seasons,
Rock Of Gibraltar was one of the most hyped horses of the year, with some commentators
trying to make something of his paper record and use it to rank him alongside
true greats such as Mill Reef and Brigadier Gerard. Good he was but a peak rating
of 125 says plenty about the quality of the opposition he met. Sure to receive
the best of support at stud and as he is by Danehill and from the family of
Riverman, he should certainly be capable of siring Group 1 horses. He is likely,
however, to cover such large numbers of mares that his overall percentage of
Stakes winners to foals will remain small.
SAKHEE (USA)
b.1997
Bahri - Thawakib, by Sadler's Wells
Shadwell Stud, Norfolk
Top class three-year-old whose season was cut short by injury, Sakhee came back
better than ever at four and became one of the best horses of the past decade.
He is an exciting stallion prospect even though he comes from a sire line more
noted for its stallion failures than successes. Sure to receive the best of
support.
SALFORD EXPRESS (IRE)
ch.1996
Be My Guest - Summer Fashion, by Moorestyle
Coolagown Stud, Co Cork
Winner of the Dante Stakes (Gr2), this half-brother to Vinnie Roe's Group 1
winning sire Definite Article (by Indian Ridge) didn't start his stallion career
until May of this year. He stands alongside Humbel, Jolly Jake and Ridgewood
Ben and is being aimed at the National Hunt market.
SAMUM (GER)
ch.1997
Monsun - Sacarina, by Old Vic
Gestüt Karlshof, Frankfurt
Classic winner, top class middle-distance performer and a full-brother to last
season's top German three-year-old filly Salve Regina, also a Classic winner,
Samum is sure to receive plenty of support in his native land. The German breeding
industry is fast becoming a major European player and there is every reason
to hope that Samum will continue to enhance his name.
SEA WAVE (GB)
b.1995
Sadler's Wells - Three Tails, by Blakeney
Easternow Stud, Co Meath
Winner of the Great Voltigeur Stakes (Gr2), full-brother to Derby-placed Group
winner Tamure and half-brother to high class though somewhat quirky stayer Three
Cheers (by Slip Anchor), Sea Wave has earned his chance at stud. His dam was
an Oaks-placed Group 2 winner and her siblings include Richard Of York (by Rainbow
Quest), Group winner in Europe and later Champion Sire in Denmark. One of their
winning half-sisters is responsible for Group 1 winner Lend A Hand (by Great
Commotion). He has his first yearlings this year and any success for him would
add further gloss to Sea Wave's appeal.
SLICKLY (FR)
gr.1996
Linamix - Slipstream Queen, by Conquistador Cielo
Haras du Logis, Normandy
Four-time Group 1 winner who was European Champion Miler in 2001, Slickly is
one of the brightest prospects to have retired to stud in France in recent years.
Sure to be well supported, he has the potential to make an impact in his native
land.
SOLO MIO (IRE)
b.1994
Sadler's Wells - Marie de Flandre, by Crystal Palace
East Burrow Farm, Devon
High class, Pattern winning stayer that was also successful in useful novice
company over hurdles, Solo Mio's carer was ended by injury. With progeny of
Sadler's Wells having proven so successful over hurdles and some of his sons
making their name as sire of chasers (for example, Accordion), he could be a
leading National Hunt sire the making.
SUMMONER (GB)
b.1997
Inchinor - Sumoto, by Mtoto
Longholes Stud, Newmarket
Stakes winning miler that surpassed all previous achievements by making all
in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr1). A half-brother to Eclipse Stakes (Gr1)
winner Compton Admiral and from the Ahonoora stallion line, he deserves support
and is an interesting prospect.
SWALLOW FLIGHT (IRE)
b.1996
Bluebird - Mirage, by Red Sunset
Ballykisteen Stud, Co Tipperary
Group 2 winning miler by Bluebird, Swallow Flight will should receive his fair
share of support. There would not appear to be any reason why he should not
sire winners and even the odd black-type scorer.
SWIFT GULLIVER (USA)
ch.1994
Gulch - Aminata, by Glenstal
Ballyash Stud, Co Down
Winner of the Tyros Stakes (L) at two and the Desmond Stakes (Gr3) at three,
Swift Gulliver was also successful at a lesser grade in America. He returns
to Ireland to join the growing stallion ranks in Northern Ireland and will stand
alongside former staying star Double Eclipse.
TENDULKAR (USA)
b.1999
Spinning World - Romanette, by Alleged
Oaklands Stud, Co Meath
A maiden winner that was beaten two short-heads in the Dewhurst Stakes (Gr1),
Tendulkar did not enjoy much luck. Injured when well-beaten in the 2,000 Guineas,
he bounced back to take minor honours in the Greenlands Stakes (Gr3) over six
furlongs but these four outings were his only ones. Speedier than his immediate
pedigree would have predicted, he is sure to gain some support.
TOBOUGG (GB)
b.1998
Barathea - Lacovia, by Majestic Light
Dalham Hall Stud, Newmarket
Dewhurst winner and champion two-year-old of 2000, Tobougg is easily the best
representative of former mile star Barathea to have raced in this hemisphere.
Out of a top class racemare, he is likely to receive some good support.
TRADITIONALLY (USA)
ch.1997
Mr Prospector - Personal Ensign, by Private Account
Ballylinch Stud, Co Kilkenny
Winner of the Oaklawn Handicap (Gr1), this horse has been brought to Ireland
as a stallion and his pulling power is mainly his relationship to Our Emblem,
the sire of this year's US champion three-year-old and dual classic winner War
Emblem. Another full-brother, Miner's Mark, has been a disappointing stallion.
That said he is by a leading sire of sires and out of a great racemare. His
introductory fee looks a bit high.
VAL ROYAL (FR)
b.1996
Royal Academy - Vadlava, by Bikala
Oak Lodge Stud, Co Kildare
Breeders' Cup Mile (Gr1) winner by the sire of Tout Seul's ill-fated sire Ali-Royal,
Val Royal is likely to prove popular with Irish breeders. Any further success
for the remainder of Ali-Royal's progeny will add further gloss to appeal. He
has already stood a season in the Southern Hemisphere.
WARNINGFORD (GB)
b.1994
Warning - Barford Lady, by Stanford
Hedgeholme Stud, Co Durham
Group 1 placed, multiple Pattern winner that excelled at seven furlongs but
was also effective at a mile, this son of Warning thoroughly deserves his chance
at stud. By the sire of Group sires Averti, Charnwood Forest and Piccolo, he
has the potential to do well as a sire of sprinters.
WELLBEING (GB)
b.1997
Sadler's Wells - Charming Life, by Sir Tristram
Plantation Stud
Dual Group 3 winner that was runner-up in the Coronation Cup (Gr1), Wellbeing
is a Sadler's Wells half-brother to Group 2 scorer and New Zealand-based sire
Kingfisher Mill. Though Sadler's Wells has been quite a disappointment as a
sire of sires, Wellbeing certainly has the potential to get Pattern winners.
