A worker honeybee telling her sisters where home is
Here's a picture of a worker honeybee, hanging on tight as she fans her Nasonov
pheromone all around her. You can see that she has bent down the last segment
of her abdomen, exposing the gland underneath. This pheromone, which smells lemony
to humans, tells honeybees where home is. It is particularly useful when the hive
is disturbed (e.g. by the beekeeper) or when the colony is swarming.
