Content / Methodology

The teacher will inform the pupils that they will publish a short newsletter in French/German/Italian.

Divide the class into 5 or 6 groups.

A brainstorming session will follow to elicit ideas for the newsletter – title, jokes, articles, competitions, prizes, word searches, etc.

The teacher will also encourage the children to include school crest, school logo, colours of the school uniform, one overall theme and the foreign language being learnt.

The teacher should encourage children to choose a theme which will facilitate the use of French/German/Italian vocabulary.

Pupils will be given 5 to 10 minutes to experiment with the features of the desktop publishing package. Teacher will point out the following:

  • Everything must go in a frame e.g. WordArt in a WordArt frame, text in a text frame, etc.

  • Explain each icon on the tool bar.

  • How to create a frame: click on the tool, point the mouse pointer where you want the frame, hold the mouse button and drag diagonally.

  • How to resize objects: select the frame, click on squares to get double arrow, resize according to taste.

  • How to move objects: select the frame, click on squares to get removal van, move according to taste.

  • How to delete: Edit then Delete, or right click on the mouse then Delete.

  • How to use existing skills: Font style, size, bold, italic, underline, colour, etc. can be used as in MS Word.

  • How to view the full page, actual frame, zoom in, zoom out, etc.

Follow Up Activities
