Artist's Statment - Alice Peillon
My work is primarily an exploration
of pattern as a method of emphasis. I am interested in directing the viewer
to look closely at individual elements that have been transformed by the
process of repetition.
I also seek to explore
the contrast between expressive paint marks and more controlled, mechanical
aspects of painting. To this end I use stencils - sourced from found images.
Architectural sources
are particularly interesting, as they provide a sense of solidity, and
well-defined shape. These man-made structures can then be made to look
organic through the process of pattern making. My work is concerned with
the process by which painting is redefining itself. I am interested in
questioning the hierarchy of the painted surface by using a combination
of artist quality and non-art materials. Some of the paintings are derived
from cut plywood or MDF while others have been made from antique shutters.
