Artist's Statment - Laura Buckley
My work is concerned with the process by
which painting is redefining itself. I am interested in questioning the
hierarchy of the painted surface by using a combination of artist quality
and non-art materials. Some of the paintings are derived from cut plywood
or MDF while others have been made from antique shutters.
My painting echo fragments of the structures
in which people are contained. Intense colour is rejected to evoke a relaxed,
meditative state of mind. Emphasis is placed on the subtleties of surface
texture. By addressing the near, the low and the common, I am promoting
the value of small things.
My work may be categorised as painting installation.
I question the limits of a piece by mediating between painting and sculpture.
Painting travel around corners or out onto the floor. I employ reflective
surfaces and deconstructed windows to comment on the relationship between
painting and life.
