This is a photograph of a local man Peter Kearns with Matthew Skelton (in the bright clothes). Peter is the only person I know of who still uses an ass and cart as his sole means of transport. He told me that he had to go as far as Tullamore (about 100 miles) to find a suitable ass. As you can imagine, 100 miles to someone who uses this means of transport is quite a journey. He needed to get an ass that was a little older and therefore not too lively but also it had to be one that was not on its last legs.
