This march was controversial from the start because the town
Pike Group and corporation had failed to agree on the format that the commemoration would
take.
The group called a meeting of all the group leaders and explained the difficulties they
were having. As a result of this and the fact that the corporation commemoration was to
clash with another important event, our group decided to attend this commemoration.
It turned out to be one of our more pleasant marches. The organisers went out of their way
to maintain the non-political/non-sectarian format that has symbolized this bicentenary
year.
We assembled ( well those of us who were there on time) at St. Peter's College and marched
to John Street where we unveiled a plaque, from there to the Bull ring and down Main
Street, then up by the southern-most of the twin churches then left at the Bandstand, up
Grogans Road and back to the college for well provisioned refreshments. |
