This was a lovely bright but very cold day. We could see snow
on the Wicklow mountains as we marched. It was a nice short march but long enough for this
time of year.
The commemorative stone was one of the biggest I've seen so far. One of the speakers said
they searched far and wide to find such a stone. I was surprised by this as the Wicklow
mountains are well known for the abundance of granite there.
At the monument there was also a mast shaped iron structure which along with some flags
had iron cut-outs of a Wicklow and Wexford pike.
As I said earlier it was very cold and way too cold for the shirt sleeves and waistcoat
that has become the uniform of the Pikeman/woman. Taking this into account some of the
longwinded speakers could have shown more consideration for the shivering groups on
parade. |
