This was probably up to this time the biggest march, with well
over a thousand marching and thousands of spectators around the streets. The town could
barely hold everyone on this beautiful day, though earlier it had poured rain but
thankfully turned out to be a lovely day.
Four main bodies of Pikemen/women arrived in Bunclody on that day, having assembled at and
marched from Carrigduff, Clohamon, Ryland and Kilmyshall.
We were commemorating the Battle of Bunclody , which two hundred years ago had been led by
Fr. Mogue Kearns from Kiltealy. ( Incidentally a member of our group is descendant of that
same Kearns family) It is estimated that about 500 people died in this battle.
