EXPERIMENT NO. 12: TESTING SAND
As rocks and stones move, they brush off each other and wear each other down. The little bits which come off are tiny chips "off the old block" and are called sand. This sand has to be washed to remove any clay it may contain if it is to be used by builders. In this experiment we try to measure the clay content of sand

Laboratory: Stokane National School
Date: 27th March 2002
Objective: To investigate if sand contains clay
Apparatus: Jam-jar of sand, jar of clean water
Method: Place sand in jam-jar, top up with water, mix and leave to settle for a few days
REPORT
We filled a jam-jar with sand, topped it up with clean water and mixed the lot together. We left it overnight and next day some clay and silt had come to the top.  We found that this measured about 2 millimetres deep, and the total height of the mixture was 100 millimetres. The sand had 2% clay in it. We tested another jar of sand and it had none which we could see or maybe very little. We could skim off this clay to make washed sand.
CONCLUSION
Sometimes sand contains clay.
