A FOSSIL IN LIMESTONE
This chunk of limestone lies close to a hedge in the school yard. There
are millions like it along the shore at Enniscrone. Four hundred million
years ago, our area was under the sea and limestone was formed from tiny
particles of lime in the water. When the sea-water evaporated, the lime
sank to the bottom of the sea. It covered plants and dead creatures and
hardened around them. Sometimes we see lime in our kettles. When the water
boils off, the lime is left behind. People burned the limestone in Stokane
to make lime about 50 years ago. There is a lime kiln close to the school. |
