Three juvenile Connaught titles were determined at Moycullen handball alley this Easter Sunday. The boys U-13 singles, boys U-16 doubles and girls U-16 doubles titles were at stake. First into the court were Maidhc Óg Ó Conghaile (Micheál Breathnach’s) representing Galway and Conor Egan from Roscommon. These two evenly matched players kept the spectators on the edge of their seats, Maidhc Óg won the first game in convincing fashion, 15-6. However, Conor Egan demonstrated his skill and determination by taking the second 15-12. The tie-breaker produced a thrilling finish, after losing his way to the dominant Roscommon boy, Maidhc Óg turned around a 4-12 deficit to make a great come-back, and won by the narrowest margin, 15-14. The Micheál Breathnach’s handball club have every reason to be proud of their new U-13 Connaught Boys Singles champion.

The second decider proved equally entertaining. Representing Galway in the Boys U-16 doubles were Séamus Ó Conghaile and Martin Mulkerrins, their Roscommon opponents were Darren Beatty and Cian Connolly. The pairings exchanged points in the early part of the game before the Moycullen boys pulled away to win comfortably, 21-10. The second game was a more balanced affair. The Roscommon duo, serving much better in this game, were leading 12-4. The match looked set for a tie-breaker. The Galway lads drew on all their experience to level the game at 15-15 and they completed their revival to finally win 21-18. Mulkerrins’ serving ability coupled with Ó Conghaile’s superb finishing brought them over the line, in this keenly contested battle, to be crowned Connaught U-16 Doubles Champions for 2008. The drama didn’t end there. The last title to be determined was the Girls U-16 doubles between Galway and Mayo. Sporting the ‘maroon and white’ were Sinéad Hanley (Micheál Breathnach’s) and Jenna Donoghue (Moycullen). The Mayo girls from the New Port club were, twin sisters- Clodagh and Ciara McManamon. Unfortunately, the match was brought to a premature end mid-way through the first game. Jenna Donoghue, having sustained a suspected dislocated shoulder, had to retire due to injury. We wish the Mayo girls and the Galway U-16 boys the best of luck in the upcoming All-Ireland Semi-finals. Courtesy Cathriona Walsh
