The first of
the final games of the ICHA All-Ireland 60x30 Intervarsities seen John Kennedy
(NUIG) play last year’s runner up and DIT student Niall Gordon in the Men’s B
Singles final. Kennedy started the game strongly and took victory on 15-3 and
then went onto to claim the Men’s B title in the second game. This match was followed by the pinnacle match of the tournament with another NUIG student in Riki O’Gara (NUIG) playing Chris Doolin of Sligo IT in the Men’s A final. Doolin had played some excellent handball in the earlier rounds overcoming last year’s winner Ger Coonan in the quarter final and Brian Carroll in the semi. In the other half of the draw O’Gara also faced tough opposition from this year’s Minor Doubles champion, Seamus O’Carroll of Limerick IT and also this year’s
Intermediate runner-up Ollie Cassidy of UL. In the first
game, Doolin continued the strong form shown in earlier rounds, earning a large victory
on 21-4. This loss was soon forgotten by O’Gara as he began to settle in the
second game and with some gutsy handball he took victory on 21-15. With the
momentum now on O’Gara’s side, he began edge ahead in the tiebreaker
and eventually took victory. In the last of
the single’s finals, newcomer Nevin McCartin made a triple victory for NUIG in the
Men’s Singles finals when he overcame Oisin Walsh of DCU. The victory
also came in three games, on a score-line of 4-15, 15-10, 11-5. In the Ladies
division a strong pairing of Marianna Rushe and Sarah Loughnane, both of NUIG
defeated mixed pairing Eimear Ní Fhallúin (UCD) and Orla Gaffney (DCU)
in the Ladies A/B team event. Rushe would also go on to win the Ladies A
final in three games over Katie Costello of DIT. In the Ladies B singles,
Joan McNulty secured another title for UL in two games over Sarah Loughnane. The players will now take
a five week break from Intervarsity handball to prepare themselves for the
ICHA All-Ireland 40x20 Team Intervarsities which will be held in Galway on
Friday 23rd-Sunday 25th November. |
