| General Information about Sligo General Hospital Sligo General Hospital is one of two general hospitals serving the population of the North West. The Hospital serves an area of 2,600 square miles with a population of 213,000 for the regional specialities and focused in on the counties of Sligo, Leitrim, South Donegal and West Cavan (110,000) for its general acute service. In addition, some regional services are provided which include all of county Donegal which gives a population catchment of 213,000 for these services. Set in the heart of Sligo Town, close to the banks of the Garavogue, the Hospital commands excellent views of Benbulbin, and the surrounding area. Originally built in the 1940's, the hospital has been through a number of redevelopments through the years, culminating with the construction a major tower block, completed in 1993. This new tower block, became the main focus for in-patient treatment for the upgraded hospital complex. With a staff of approximately 1150 (including approx 550 nursing staff), the hospital is a major employer in the region. The hospital has its own School of nursing, which works in partnership with St.Angela's Regional College, to run the new National Diploma in General Nursing, and the two year access course for the Bsc Degree in Nursing, in affiliation with the National University of Ireland-Galway.
