New developments in Nursing at Sligo General

Arising from the Health Strategy 1994, Sligo General Hospital became one of the four pilot sites in the Republic for changing management structures. In 1996 the hospital structure was split into Specialities, devolving accountability and decision making to a speciality Management team which comprises all of the Consultants and Sisters in the speciality. Leading this team is a speciality Co-ordinator (Consultant) and a Unit Nursing Officer/ Services Manager. Each year a service plan is produces by each speciality outlining proposed activity, developments and performance indicators for the year ahead. These accumulate for the hospital service plan which in turn feeds into the Health Board Service Plan which is submitted to the Department of Health as the basis for funding.

From a Nursing perspective the Unit Nursing Officer/ Service Manager job is a new one replacing the more traditional Assistant Director of Nursing role. The Unit Nursing Officer/ Service Manager is the main catalyst for the production of service plans.

Nursing forums within the hospital include the Nurse Education Committee. The Sisters Committee, The Staff Nurse Committee and currently a steering group on the organisation of patient care, which is co-ordinating, the introduction of care plans on two pilot wards.

Care is delivered on 15 in-patient ward areas namely: -

The School works in close partnership with St.Angela's Regional Training College, in providing the National Diploma course and the access course for the Bsc in Nursing, accredited by the National University of Ireland-Galway.

The School also runs a twice yearly Return to Nursing Practice course, and an annual Diploma Orthopaedics course. Other speciality courses are planned for the future.
